Exactly. A third party candidate — ONLY for president, of course — is total salvation.
SOOoooo much easier and neater to have a silver bullet to solve all our problems and issues, rather than examining the candidates in depth, even some of the down ballot ones.
.
And what do you think ought to be the platform of this ‘third party’? “Whatever our candidate wants”?
Joe Lieberman and Joe Manchin make me throw up a little in my mouth. What are these silver bullet unicorns going to improve by trying to throw the election to Cheetolini?
Take all the money out of politics, no private donations. Make it easier for a 3rd party candidate to actually run. Eliminate the archaic Electoral College, use ranked choice voting. Quit assuming that candidates have to be perfect angels, they are human.
A third party as our salvation is the ultimate in wishcasting.
Isn’t it interesting that everyone cares very much about who they vote for (for president) but then staunchly defend the “democratic republic” nature of the system, where they nominally vote for a person (elector) to have the wisdom to vote for the right person for president. This is an archaic anachronism.
Our problem is the first past the post voting system encourages extremism. As mourdac points to above, the real long term answers are rank choice voting and eventually getting rid of the electoral college. In the mean time, trying to get states to adopt proportional allocation of electoral votes (such as Maine and Nebraska today) would help.
ironically, if people would learn to use it, the electoral college could raise the profile of 3rd parties. All democrats in North Dakota for example could vote green without hurting the democratic candidate cause the state isnt going to vote dem anyway.
Looking to another human being for “salvation” is making a career out of pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. Looking to political human beings for that is just plain insanity.
You’re right, Scott, you have been down the road before, seemingly every 4 years. Just grow the f*** up and realize you will never get your perfect candidate. It’s not complicated, advocate for who you think is best and stop with the “throwing up in my mouth” crap. It’s juvenile and lazy and doesn’t really contribute to the discourse.

We already have a party with that exact platform.

That’s what I do, Winslow. Difference is if the other options are also unacceptable to me, I’ll write my own name in.

Yeeesh! It’s 2016 again, and I’m looking at a 3rd party candidate so I can be absolved.
