“Fourth down, Madison back to punt” sounds familiar for teams that can’t get a touchdown so they have to dump the ball to the opposition and push them back further. But, before the forward pass was used, the punt was often an offensive move. One team was most noted for using punts to score touchdowns. They’d punt on 2nd or 3rd down. They used their brutal defensive strategy to shake the ball loose from the other team, grab it and run in on in for a touchdown. Ahh, those were the days.
