The last crash of a commercial aircraft in the USA with many people killed was in 2009. The worst thing that happened to an airliner in the whole world since then was Malaysian Air Flight 17, shot down by Russian-controlled forces in the Ukraine in 2014. 298 passengers and crew. Not much the pilots could have done whether or not they saw it coming.

And the fuel tanks were right in front of him.
