And herein lies the reason I am no longer Catholic. I found the Catholic Church to be too long on form and too short on substance. Rituals were more important than service.
I do not serve God to save my soul.
I believe that I cannot serve God without serving his people: ALL of his people.
I am fortunate to be a member of a little church with a big mission: serve our local community. We partner with other churches, the community center across the street, a contractor who will be building affordable housing on property we will sell them, local restaurants and stores for the goods for our free market and community dinners …
There’s nothing “wrong” with being Catholic; it “works” for millions of people. It’s just that my new church provides me with a better means to serve other people.
Oh yeah, there is that other thing on Sunday mornings: provide spiritual fulfillment for the congregation.
Like many religions it has become more of a business than a faith. And a massive business at that. The current pope has quite a mess to address however a reform has to start somewhere.
