It was all Jills fault. Pushing Jack to do better and it just became too much that Jack threw himself down the hill and Jill in remorse came tumbling after. A sad tale repeated every day.
It was in my teens that I thought the whole rhyme was a little story that Jack made up to explain how Jill was now all covered in weeds and stuff. It also explained how he (cough, cough) got a bump on his head (I guessed he got a little carried away rolling around on the ground…with Jill).

I could never figure out why a well would be up a hill. Shouldn’t it be at the bottom, closer to the aquifer?
