Coming Soon 👀 At the beginning of April, you’ll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
In the cartoon, it appears god is calling the reader of the 11th commandment stupid. It would likely have a dash instead of three dots before the word “stupid” if that was a signature. The dots merely suggest a pause for the reader. As for the content, it’s not about the “success” of a particular work, it’s about giving away something you worked so hard on that you could potentially be making an earning on. I wonder if this is in response to the growing debate on print versus web based cartoons?
cfortunato, you have a “Pro” account. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t that mean you paid for the account? Granted, Dave Alvarez (creator of Yenny) says the royalties he earns from GoComics is enough to buy a #1 meal at Wendy’s (per his blog), but having a “Pro” account suggests you are paying for the service. So, not everyone is viewing it online “for free”.
That’s the OLD god - terrifying, short-tempered, and revengeful, from a time when content was distributed carved in stone. There are others. Cory Doctorow for example disagrees: “Think Like a Dandelion” http://www.locusmag.com/Features/2008/05/cory-doctorow-think-like-dandelion.html
It is interesting that humans want to make God responsible for all of their stupidity, greed, carelessness, and cruelty. God is telling us to STOP all that stuff!
even though i’ve read this comic for free for years on the internet. oh, and then there’s all these ads all around it to support the site and the comic.
so, who gave me this free content? the creator? the syndicate? or the advertisers on this site? because i certainly didn’t pay to read this today so someone gave it to me for free.
isn’t that really the bugaboo in the whole syndicated/web comics debate? who pays for access?
(i’m assuming this comic was inspired by the stuff going on at the daily cartoonist)
I actually think this is one of the best newspaper comics around, but I have to wonder where Wiley’s been the last decade or so. NOBODY pays for content anymore, unless it’s porn.
I really wish that God should add to ten commandments with “Thou shall not deny.” I never like the way the people keep denying about something they did stupidly.
Haha, in a recent essay Doctorow writes:
‘In 2009, the world is populated by people who no longer believe that “Thou shalt sell media on plastic discs forever” came down off the mountain on two stone tablets.’

Heh, Yahweh should take a look at the success of some of the audio books on podiobooks if he thinks that’s stupid. I knew he wasn’t omniscient.

That would be scientology’s first commandment

So, this gods name is stupid? Looks like that’s what it signed with. That would go a long way to explain what’s going on.

What about usury? it’s almost, kinda, sorta, close.

Is this a coincidence? Today’s “Pearls Before Swine” is on the same topic. Perhaps it’s the Cartoonist Conspiracy making its move.

I don’t access it for free (moneywise) but otherwise I’d have to pay for it in belly-fat ads.

If that’s the 11th commandment, then Thou shalt make BACKUPS must be the 12th commandment.

Chikuku says:
“Actually, there are 613 commandments in the Hebrew Bible.”
Yes, but apparently only ten were carried down from the Mountain on the stone tablets.

Nice point Wiley!…wait, I’m reading this comic online for free. Oops.
imnotbob almost 16 years ago
Oh a shot at webcomics there maybe? We’ll see who will be paying for you to draw your cartoon when newspapers die.

okay, so the question is: what is wiley making fun of? is it webcomics or is it syndicates? because it could go either way.

How’re you getting this comic for free? I pay for it. Don’t call me a bad name for paying for it… I believe in supporting intellectualism.
Boots at the Boar Premium Member almost 16 years ago
Amen, brother. Hopefully the newspaper publishers read their own comics pages.
