I actually did not know my number during the Vietnam War, looked it up years ago I was in the last third of the list. Was hoping to get out of it do to history of epilepsy at the time.
I enlisted in the Marines in 1963. That was before the U.S. build up. In March of 1965, ,my battalion was part of the first U.S. troops to arrive in S. Vietnam.
My number was 310, but my brother was 365. Because of Leap Years there were 366 numbers, so he wasn’t the highest, but I’m sure our Mom and Dad were glad we weren’t going to Viet Nam.
Wait a minute. I was 18 when they did the first draft lottery, so I had to wait a year (as it was for 19-year-olds). Is this comic strip saying this old grampa is only a year older than me? Thank heaven I’m still lucid and healthy. BTW, I got a high number and was not drafted. I had dropped my student deferment and took my chances on the lottery. Not the smartest thing I ever did but it worked out.
I remember draft lottery day! I got a 364 which meant I wasn’t going to ’Nam, which was a place I REALLY did not want to go! My best friend at the time, however, got #1, so his only real choice was to enlist in the Navy.

I got lucky twice. First year (1971) it was a student deferment. Second year I got a high number(322) in the lottery.

My birthday was #1, but they decided not to draft anyone that year. To this day it’s the only lottery I ever won.
