I had one cat who wore the Dreaded Cone for a week. He woke me up when he battered the cone off, so he could get out the cat door onto the balcony. He came in later to show me he had pulled out his stitches.

    “Ta-da! Cured!”

    And he was.

    ————————————

I had another cat who needed to wear the cone for a couple of weeks. We were accustomed to walking around the neighborhood together, where we had terrific views of Morro Rock and the ocean. He still wanted to go for walks so I fitted him with a leash and harness. He had only worn a leash when traveling and was not too happy about it. The cone kept banging on the ground; it took him a while to figure out how to look down without moving his head.

Anyway, he was giving it his best effort when a garbage truck came roaring down the hill. I tried to hold him but he leapt away. Fortunately, the old, leather leash broke or he would have dislocated my shoulder.

The truck passed. A minute later, he came out of the bushes. “Let’s go.” We continued our walks through the rest of his “cone treatment”, without needing a leash.

He was an exceptional cat, bold but cautious, and trained to be wary on walks with me since kittenhood. Don’t just decide to take your cat walking with no training.
