Slang them down, I always say.

Once I was at Walmart many years ago and some little brat around 4 was screaming and hollering. The mother cried “I’ll buy you anything you want Heather if you’ll just stop crying!” How pathetic! I wanted to tell her if she gives in when the brat is only around 4, what will she be like at 14?

Her alternative response offer would be, loudly, “I told you I’d buy you that toy if you stopped wetting the bed.”

It would be more effective if she’d said “… scold you misusing your generation’s …”
