On TV shows and movies people never ever lock the doors so anyone can walk in unhindered. In comics everyone has the door locked at all times so they can lock themselves out. I have to unlock my front door to open it. So if it slams shut, it is unlocked. Also I can get in thru the garage by feeding in the code on the keypad door opener unit.
Why do people have their doors permanently locked? In Canada we rarely have to do that. We trust our neighbours (with good reason) and we look out for each other. Americans do not trust anyone (not that I have ever seen). That mistrust is 90% in the cities. Rural folks do trust because they rely on each other a lot.
When my elderly father was living with us at the time, he accidently locked himself out of the house while we were all gone on vacation. It was a bad time. The neighbors eventually saw him wandering around the neighborhood in his pajamas and called the police. They took care of things.
I was a general contractor before I retired and I installed hundreds of doors and locks. The main thing I always made sure of was that closing the door couldn’t automatically lock for just that reason. It can be dangerous and frightening in certain cases.
My first thought was that she’s lucky that the newspaper is still being delivered to her house. In my area, our local paper (a well-known national one) decided last year to switch from home carrier delivery to mail delivery. The change effectively turned a morning paper into an afternoon paper, much to my chagrin…
(Yes, I know I can read the paper online in the morning, but to me, it’s just not the same reading experience.)

It’s a terrible feeling knowing you’re locked out. I always pin a spare key to my clothes.

Should’ve got the paper while they were still home.
