There was a recent Fred Basset strip – actually a reprint from the original artist Alex Graham – in which Fred’s mistress told someone, “His bark is worse than his bite.” Fred thought, “How does she know? I’ve never bitten anyone!”

I survived my Lizzie’s puppy teeth! But she never bit me on purpose, thank goodness!

Don’t start biting yourself now, Rover!

Probably hasn’t barked at himself, either.
