Hugh, almost everybody makes the NHL playoffs, no matter how bad, so don’t count them out yet, dark as the possibility may be. Besides, like every team in every sport, they are “building for next year.”
Actually, it’s 16 of 30 NHL teams that make the playoffs now, which isn’t quite so bad. Maybe you’re thinking of the time years ago when 16 of then 21 teams advanced to the post-season. (And the tradition goes back to the ‘Original Six’ era, where 4 of the 6 teams would go to the playoffs.)
Now the wisdom of putting hockey teams in many non-traditional hockey cities is another argument.

If this was a hockey player, it would be San Jose’s former goalie Evgeni Nabokov. I hope the Islanders put him back on waivers though.

As if the Isles needed a veteran goalie, it’s not like they’re going to make the playoffs anyway, I heard he isn’t even going to bother showing up.
