When I first got my apartment as a single guy in the mid-1970s, I bought some bargain dinnerware and utensils that supermarkets used to sell. Almost 50 years and few minor nicks here and there later, I’m still using them.

Melmac was the ‘every day’ dinnerware when I was growing up in the 50’s & 60’s. I was so glad it was virtually unbreakable when I had to wash dishes.

Look at the stacked cups and you’ll see why those plates are small.

Just eat more servings. They don’t care if your plate’s large, small, plastic or paper

Plates were smaller because more people crowded around the table and there wasn’t room for a large plate.

When mom was trying to lose weight in the ‘60s (although she really wasn’t much overweight), her doc told her to fix her plate for dinner and then take 1/2 of the food off. It worked.

The last family picnic I attended, my eldest sister asked me how I stayed slim. I said, “My first and only plateful was smaller than your thirds.”

Alex is the type who will give thin, fit women who work hard, eat right and exercise dirty looks and call them a nasty name or say “Lucky!” As if luck had something to do with turning down all the pastries and whatnot.

I’d love to see her try that with my competition level, bodybuilder friend. LOL

This is why I rely on my kitchen scale.

Plates sizes used to correspond with the meal course. There are salad plates, dessert plates, and dinner plates, just to name a few. I remember my mom saying, her mil would roll over in her grave if she saw a ketchup bottle on the table. The children were fed separately when she came over. She would arrive hours late and my poor mom would go nuts trying to save the food from drying out.

I believe using small plates has helped me lose weight and keep it off.
