A former co-worker of mine had a Great Dane who if she picked up from her human you’re okay she was friendly she was ok. Sadly if you were of Afican decent she was cool but she’d had the “Dirty Harry” look: “Go ahead, make my day”.
Our Rottweilers had a sense of people. Most of the time they were big goofs who loved ear scratching and tummy rubs. There were times with some people and didn’t matter if the person was male or female, or a particular ethnicity, they immediately would assume a posture that communicated that they were prepared to do violence if someone bothered my wife. My wife paid close attention to their cues.
Dogs are protective by nature and some breeds are more aggressive than others, they definitely know if you are afraid and respond to that by turning their attention to whoever or whatever is causing it.

It’s not a particularly good idea to get on the bad side of a Great Dane.
