I fractured an ankle about 11 years ago on an icy lot at work, definitely not worth taking the chance sliding down a bannister. 2 metal plates, 2 months of cast and rehab, still aches sometimes.
Our Heyburn grade school, which was built in 1925, in our small town put dowel pieces ever couple of feet on the banisters, so that kids can’t slide down them.

Way to go Lola! I’ve never seen anyone slide down the bannister on their back.
