Hi Tribe! I’m back. It’s a beautiful day out, once I pry myself from the computor.
Hry Doc T. You’d better check on your cat. When it’s not playing with the mouse, it’s humming “The Cat Came Back” and watching a blue movei called “Puss in Boots”!
Tsk-Tsk! what will the neighbours think?
Hi again tribe! Just got back from an exhausting day. We were taking a CCH class. I was the only female - rather nice to not have to stand in line for the restroom for a change. I got 24 out of 25, so I did pretty good considering my lack of experience. I guess we were doing our part to preserve our liberties that our ancestors fought for.
Hello RRAmom, and good bye,
I am off for the rest of the night and probably most of tomorrow.
so take care all and I will be back tomorrow night or Monday morning.
Doc, I just got up from long nap too. I think you are getting some of our FL weather, cloudy and cool.
JFri, yes, I want some BBQ ribs, thank you. YUM!
RMom - Ahh, that’s why I didn’t make the connection. Canada is very restrictive on civilian handguns, so you seldom see them outside of shooting ranges or police/security types.
Gas jumped up again for the weekend :(
Went up about 10¢/L or (nearly 40¢/gallon) from last week. We’re now paying about 95¢/L (about $3.58/gallon)
I did hear they’ve found the cause of the whole oil supply issue though: It seems nobody was properly checking the oil levels, as all the oil reserves are in the west, and all the dipsticks are in Ottawa and Washington DC (no offense DCGuys)
RRAmom: CCH is concealed carry handguns? We don’t have handguns in public here. Well, except for the guys in gangs who use them around our fair city to kill people. But other than that, we only see them on TV! :~)
Traditionally gas prices go up on Memorial Day Weekend and stay high throughout the summer. They say it’s because they are using a “summer blend” that’s more expensive, but they know more people travel in the summer.
Plenty of ribs for everybody even though I worked up quite an appetite hilking 8 1/2 miles across the dunes today! DRY, I have a new pic of Cache in the dunes I will post next week!
doctortoon: I’ll bring a letter knife. Your collection sounds interesting. We could ambush SOTU if they get mutinous. We’d ask Pirate to train us for battle of course. A keg o rum for starters!
KS hasn’t had a concealed carry law for very long - just a couple of years, I think. I wasn’t that interested, but since my husband is and wanted me to get one, too, I decided it might be best if I did. He grew up around guns, his grandfather had them all over the place. My dad didn’t have any while we kids lived at home - I might not have quite as many brothers if he had, considering the way they fought! I also couldn’t hit the target when I had tried (4-H camp) - found out many years later it is because I’m right-handed, but left eye dominant. When we got married, I insisted on learning how to handle guns, if they were going to be in the house. Did fairly well with a shotgun and tin cans, but didn’t enjoy it enough for a hobby. (Can’t stand to fix/eat game, either, so no point in going hunting.) After the election, my husband insisted on buying a handgun (only had shotguns & rifles). Same thing, might as well learn how to handle one if I’m going to have it in the house. It has been extremely difficult since the election to buy ammo that size, so I only practiced with it once. Hit the target enough times that my husband said I’d be able to qualify, so I haven’t wanted to waste the ammo to improve my aim. The instructor was shocked to find out that I hit that well, considering I didn’t need all my fingers to count the times I’ve been out shooting with any gun, and only once ever before with a handgun.
I know Canada is much more of a gun-control country. Some guy from HQ in Canada was down to the KS plant. My husband & his boss took the guy out for lunch. As the conversation somehow turned to guns, he made the comment he didn’t even know anyone who owned a gun. My husband just said: “Oh yes you do, you just don’t realize it.” I hope I never have need to use a gun to kill someone, but I’d rather be equipped to handle a situation, than just wish I was. We have more leeway with guns where we live, since we’re not inside city limits. No problem to make our own private shooting range, and no permit required to shoot for practice and non-game critters. This means our sons (16 & 19) can also learn to handle/shoot the gun, even though they can’t buy one, ammo, or get a CCH permit until they’re 21.
I never dreamed I would work to get a CCH permit when the law was first proposed, but I’ve always thought it a great idea, because if only the bad guys and cops have guns, there are going to be a lot more victims, than if the bad guys aren’t sure they are the only ones on the scene with guns. I’m a fairly calm individual, and can function under stress well. (After the adreneline rush is over, is when I have problems.) I would not recommend it for everyone, but I think it is wise to not be sitting ducks for people who don’t care if they’re breaking a law.
Akenta, thanks for that gas info, I hadn’t noticed that. I don’t ususally travel in the summer, but when I do, I notice that the gas prices are much lower in Texas.
When we left WA state for Texas in “98, we paid about 1.10 for gas in Wa and when we got to Texas it was .69 there. I had to call my friends in WA and brag.
Carmy - I’ve noticed gas prices are usually lower in states that produce oil. I believe much of the price difference is due to the amount of tax a state levies - states where the oil industry is big, don’t want to upset the oil producers. Of course, how far the gas has to be transported from a refinery would make a difference as well.
shika help yourself! Make no mistake, though….I HIKED across the dunes. I am too tall & too old to do a lot of running. I play hockey but that doesn’t pound your knees like running!
RRAmom: Thanks for the information. I wasn’t making a judgement, just a joke. I hoope you know that. Still, I’d be nervous about having a gun here. Most of the shootings we have that aren’t gang related are people caught in the crossfire- wrong place, wrong time. I doubt a gun would save them. But people can kill no matter what laws are in place. One of the most horrific killings here recently involved a man who cut off the head of a passenger on a bus in Ontario. He said that a “voice” told him to do it. I believe he used an axe or a machete, I forget which.
doc - I know at least one (if not more) of my hubby’s shotguns are antique.
It was interesting to learn about the KS law on weapons - okay to carry a baseball bat to hit someone, not okay to carry a billy club. They also covered under what conditions you are permitted to shoot (to kill - just to wound is against the law - LOL!) I actually will be permitted to use my gun under some conditions where my husband wouldn’t be, because I’m not as physically strong. I will say there was a LOT of info covered today, so I’m going to have to do some studying to make sure I have the applicable parts of the law memorized.
Gee Tribe, I hate to leave the party when It’s just beginning, but I’ve got to get up early for church tomorrow. I may check in a few before I toddle off, but if I don’t make it back here, have a good night!
Shikamoo - I didn’t take it the wrong way. Since my husband insists on owning guns, I figured I’d be less nervous if I knew how to handle it. Don’t like them, but they’re like a power tool. Handled correctly, very helpful. Handled incorrectly, death or injuries can result. I have a healthy respect for guns. Cops can’t be everywhere all the time.
Well, probably enough on this topic, or it might count as “politics”. Although, if anyone has a question, I’ll do my best to answer it.
Well we had an absolutely spectacular and fun day today. The rhodies are in bloom and we bought two that are polar opposites of one another. One has tiny leaves and grows to be a foot tall in 10 years. The other has large leaves and grows at least a foot a year. It also blooms from November into March. We also went to the town of Langley, Wa which sits on the water and has wonderful shops to browse. We sat outside and had steam mussels and duck leg confit served on puy lentils and frisee. The sun was glorious and now I am relaxing with whomever is around, if anyone still is.
RRAmom, I noticed that too about the gas prices in those states. However, the gas in the Chicago area is low too and I don’t think they have gas production in that area. Correct me if I’m wrong.
BBL, going to watch a movie with my girls.
I’m here Shika. I actually was reading your comment about my avatar looking like an owl. I took a close look at it and instead of looking like one of The Furry Freak Bros., it looks like big bird.
I changed it when Rad pointed out that someone I made a comment to immediately changed their avatar to look like the mirror image of the last one I was using. I don’t know what my comment was, if it was positive or a challenge. I just remember his gocomics name.
Carmy - I’ve only been in Chicago to change planes for quite a while. That’s interesting about the gas being lower there, not what I would expect. Maybe in the rural areas of IL they produce oil, but it isn’t well known if that’s the case.
I know it seems wherever my in-laws are living, we always have lower gas prices on the average in KS than they do. KS has a fair amount of oil production, but OK & TX both produce more. I’m far from an expert on oil production, but since it is one of KS’s natural resources, I’m not totally clueless.
Well, good night tribe! I’m about ready to fall asleep on my keyboard.
I didn’t take offense at the dipsticks (cleaner than I hear it around here) in Washington. I agree. It almost made me not take the job I have which I really enjoy. I work for the company that administers the Universal Service Fund (USF) that the majority of us in the USA pay as part of the Federal taxes on our phone bills. I work for the division that distributes the funds - through telecommunications vendors - to the schools & libraries. Although I don’t get to visit the recipients, students & library patrons I do get to hear a lot of thank you for getting us connected to the Internet or helping us pay our phone bill.
RRAmom - Sorry the fund doesn’t cover homeschooling.
The other divisions distribute funds to High Cost areas (like Alaska, Guam, etc.); low income families/seniors, etc.; and rural health care facilities to allow them access to sophisticated diagnostic tools and other medical professionals who may otherwise be unattainable.
Enough work…it’s the weekend! I, too, enjoyed a small BBQ with friends. No alcohol since we all had to drive after. Am listening to some various new & old music while catching up on today’s Tribal hubbub. I expected today to be slow but all y’all have kept things moving. Hope everyone continues to have a great weekend.

I don’t know if you will notice this marg, but I figured there was a better chance that you would see it here than where it was originally posted, but Dypak hit the nail on the head. You are a good pal to us all and I hope that your day was as wonderful as mine was today.
You are right. Artists in any medium are just a bit out of the norm. I have been involved in the arts all my life. My mother was a painter. I went to art school, then photography school and met people definitely on the fringe. I was so depressed with the wham bam loss of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin in such a close proximity of time. And Jim Morrison, what a loss.
My dad was a commercial artist, but I always thought he should have been a cartoonist. He had a somewhat dry sense of humor. His brother was the head of the English Department at a small college in Hastings, NE. When they got together, most of us just got our favorite libation, sat back and enjoyed the show. I miss them both.
From my mid-20s to late 30s I was in the bar/club business and was introduced to entertainment that I would probably have not experienced otherwise. I have the utmost respect for artists who can wow the crowd; whether they be musicians, sculptors or landscapers. Of course…I also give them plenty of room out of caution as well.
I’m a neutral as far as gun control goes. I think that people should be able to have guns for hunting and reasonable protection (I don’t think anyone needs to privately own automatic weapons). I also think a properly managed gun registry (not like the Candian one that wasted billions and was useless) is appropriate and should include ballistics info so that crimes can be more easily traced back.
There was a fellow in my painting class in art school who had a disability pension from the gov. in Canada. So he basically couldn’t work. He was a very talented painter, but I remember he took one canvas and painted a landscape. Over the course of the class he took that landscape and that single canvas through all four seasons. Each painting was wonderful, but his handicap was a mental one and he could not seem to let go of that one image.
Wow, I thought I had refreshed, then found there was a whole ‘nother page after posting the comment above. Well I’m about ready to pack it in, later all!
CLEO: I’m here. Yes, I saw what Dypak wrote, that was lovely! I’m so glad that you both had such a good day today.

Gas jumped up again for the weekend :( Went up about 10¢/L or (nearly 40¢/gallon) from last week. We’re now paying about 95¢/L (about $3.58/gallon) I did hear they’ve found the cause of the whole oil supply issue though: It seems nobody was properly checking the oil levels, as all the oil reserves are in the west, and all the dipsticks are in Ottawa and Washington DC (no offense DCGuys)

carmy over 15 years ago
BTW, try to remember to fill up before they raise the prices for the next holiday, I do.
Akenta over 15 years ago
Traditionally gas prices go up on Memorial Day Weekend and stay high throughout the summer. They say it’s because they are using a “summer blend” that’s more expensive, but they know more people travel in the summer.

(After the adreneline rush is over, is when I have problems.) I would not recommend it for everyone, but I think it is wise to not be sitting ducks for people who don’t care if they’re breaking a law.
carmy over 15 years ago
Akenta, thanks for that gas info, I hadn’t noticed that. I don’t ususally travel in the summer, but when I do, I notice that the gas prices are much lower in Texas. When we left WA state for Texas in “98, we paid about 1.10 for gas in Wa and when we got to Texas it was .69 there. I had to call my friends in WA and brag.
Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago
Bald - I left a note for you at Cleats.
Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago
Carmy - I’ve noticed gas prices are usually lower in states that produce oil. I believe much of the price difference is due to the amount of tax a state levies - states where the oil industry is big, don’t want to upset the oil producers. Of course, how far the gas has to be transported from a refinery would make a difference as well.
The Duke 1 over 15 years ago
shika help yourself! Make no mistake, though….I HIKED across the dunes. I am too tall & too old to do a lot of running. I play hockey but that doesn’t pound your knees like running!
Shikamoo Premium Member over 15 years ago
RRAmom: Thanks for the information. I wasn’t making a judgement, just a joke. I hoope you know that. Still, I’d be nervous about having a gun here. Most of the shootings we have that aren’t gang related are people caught in the crossfire- wrong place, wrong time. I doubt a gun would save them. But people can kill no matter what laws are in place. One of the most horrific killings here recently involved a man who cut off the head of a passenger on a bus in Ontario. He said that a “voice” told him to do it. I believe he used an axe or a machete, I forget which.
Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago
doc - I know at least one (if not more) of my hubby’s shotguns are antique.
Shikamoo Premium Member over 15 years ago
JFri: I checked your last post, and you’re right! You hiked, not ran across the dunes. (Aren’t you glad I notice these things?)

Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago

Good night Shika.
I need to be signing off too, sorry Cleo.

You are right. Artists in any medium are just a bit out of the norm. I have been involved in the arts all my life. My mother was a painter.
