Sorry, but too early to be clever, I guess. I will say g’morning and g’day to those who are around or passing through. The only American Idol I followed was the last four or five episodes with David Cook. Something about his singular presentation of the music was exciting and fresh. His rendition of “Billie Jean” was amazing. Glad he won. Uh-oh…is this becoming politicsl (wink, snerk)

    Better make the rounds. P, L & S all!

doc I try to enter my books in my database immediately after purchase. That way, I also put in how much I paid for it, and where I bought it, while I can still find the receipt (or remember). I have plenty of books I haven’t read yet. We’re doing history chronologically, using real books, instead of textbooks. So I generally wait until when we’re studying that time frame to read those books. However, I love reading fiction from the library, and if I run across any that I think my guys will enjoy, I read them (aloud) to the whole family. Makes long drives through boring countryside more interesting and gives us something to talk about as a family.

doc While I love owning books, I’ve found it much more practical for me to utilize the libraries. I just don’t have the space to store more books, even if I buy them cheaply. My rule-of-thumb for buying is that I can’t borrow it somewhere, and need it for school. Most other books if we wait a little, can be checked out through libraries. In KS you can request an “inter-library loan” if your local library doesn’t carry it. Therefore, I have access to almost all the libraries in KS, at no cost. (Other than my tax dollars, of course.)

doc - I am sure your youngsters are appreciative of your willingness to loan. If we lived closer, my sons would want to become part of your tribe, so they could borrow from your collection. Several years ago my sister took my sons to visit a friend of hers, who is single & childless. My youngest son looked around, and expressed amazement that there wasn’t anything to read at this friend’s house. He knew better than to expect toys, but he’d never been in a house before that didn’t have at least newspapers or magazines to read.

It has been several years since we went through the Brother Cadfael series. Got hooked on them, because one of them was recommended for our history study. (To help understand the monastic culture in that time frame.) After we’d read all the books, then we checked a few of the movies out of the library. We were all quite disappointed that in one of the movies, they made the villian a different person than the one in the book. It was especially distressing to us, because the movie villian would have been related to us. (I’ve got one line of my genealogy that has been traced clear back to the 900’s and the Viking invasions)

    Hi everyone!

I’m way too late for breakfast or lunch, so I’ll just visit. Time for cocktails soon over here anywys, not that I drink. (wink).

Jfri and Dry, all this talk about dancing reminds me of a time when our teen club went to the maximum security penitentary to sing Christmas carols for the inmates. Then they played music, and I danced with this great hulk of a guy who must have been over 6’5” * : ) *It was sort of a waltz, and I was being swung around while everyone else snickered.

Later I asked who he was, and they said, “Oh that’s Bob White. He has an extra “Y” (or is it “X”) chromosome. (That’s why he was so tall and strong.) But the kicker was that he was in there for killing someone.

I doubt if they would do that these days, but the head of the place believed in rehab for everyone, and Bob was allowed “out” for good behavior.

Dry My sister and I joke about our height. She’s 5’ 1/2” , I’m more like 5’3/4” now–but I’m still taller than her!

Thomas Edison had just recently invented the light bulb, and The Wright Brothers were wonder kids who defied the law of gravity. But I’d give anything to have that set again. There was poetry and history too, and all kinds of intersting articles.

Let’s see, we went from listing songs, to tv shows, and now on to books - though maybe not in that order. I also kept a list of the books I own (that are in my library). When my laptop died 5 years ago, I stopped updating since I wasn’t sure how much I lost. Now I’ve got a pile of books I need to add one day. I don’t add a book until I’ve read it from my “to read” bookcase. This year I’m actually keeping that resolution so the books are slowly going off of there.

    *HAPPY FLAG DAY

Although my Guidepost (American) calender says that your flag day is the 14th of June, not the 15th. Do you make it a long weekend? In Canada, we used to make Canada day into a long weekend, but in retail now, they give us the day off (when I was there) on Canada day. This year, it’s on a Wednesday. Bummer for those who aren’t in banking or the government.

I am also a cookbook fanatic, but I have began to control myself and get most of them from the Library instead of buying them. When I moved in with my wife, we cut back all cookbooks to just the ones we use or get ideas from. She is more a follow the recipe cook , while I use recipes as building blocks for giving me ideas.

Cleo I cook the same way. In fact, I read recipes for relaxation and then use them to make my own creations. Problem is, when I’m asked for a recipe- I can’t always remember how I cooked it, and they tell me that it just doesn’t taste the same as what I cooked. Sigh. I try.

Listening to books while gardening however, combines the best of two worlds, if you have a good book and lots of gardening like your wife.

I likely wuld not be a good candidate for doing both- I get easily distracted and would tuen out one or the other of the activities. (And plant something upside down if you get the picture.)

They had never had a garage sale, but Dad loved going to farm auctions. Both of my parents grew up in the depression, so they kept everything, including the curtains from their WW2 apartment! I’ve come to realize that much of what we keep our kids won’t want, so it just becomes trash.

It looks like another stormy night here. Last night a tornado hit a house about 40 miles south of me. Tonight is predicted to be worse. Just missed getting marble to golf-sized hail within the last hour, it got a town about 15 miles north of me. Tornado watch until midnight. Flood watch, too. I guess if I can’t sleep because of the storms, I might be on BT late tonight. That is, if the internet stays up.

Now that she’s unable to read, I just go through the cards, check for address changes, etc. and toss in the trash. Can’t say the weather is boring here! I was just checking one of the local tv stations to see what sort of live streaming weather coverage I could find. Is it normal for a television station to have 5 meterologists on staff? I can understand why they have so many, because they’ll do round-the-clock live weather coverage if there is a tornado warning in their viewing area.

When I was spending my winters in southern Texas I could go accuweather and get the weather 15 days in advance and have it be spot on. Here in the Pacific Northwest it must be humiliating to be a meteorologist as the weather forecasts are more often than not, wrong.

Akenta - Thanks! Tornado season is the primary reason I won’t own a house without a basement. I’ve seen the aftermath of a tornado, where there isn’t a stud left standing. We’ve got weather alarms in the house programmed to go off when a severe storm is near, so at least we’ll know in time to take cover.

cleo accuweather was started by a meterologist - Mike Smith - who (at least used to) worked in Wichita. I’m not sure where he’s based now, but it is probably in KS or OK. We attract people who are extremely interested in the weather. We offer most every kind of weather: tornadoes, hail, flash floods, drought, sleet, freezing rain, snow, highs above 100F, lows below 0F. I think it makes it interesting and challenging for a meterologist, which is why we get top-notch ones here. The ones who didn’t do so well in their classes go to places where the weather doesn’t change as fast. (Nothing like dropping 20 degrees or more in 30 minutes or less, when a cold front moves through.)

Just dropped in to say Hi everybody. Great news Carmi. I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who likes to read. I had to get rid of several of my books when we moved into this place. Now I really would like to get some of them back but I can’t find them. I always check out second hand bookstores, garage sales etc. IN the meantime, I couldn’t live without the library. I have loved reading since I was a kid and my mother read to us every night. I find everything else is just an irritating intrusion in my reading time. Except visiting here of course. I also like music but my favorites don’t seem to be too popular here. I like country music but my very favorite is the old time western and cowboy songs. My only connection with cowboy “culture” is watching tv and reading.

I don’t really need to know the weather, in the summer it is mostly sunny, but it can get stormy. For the most part though, the weather is quite mild so there isn’t usually a pressing need to check it, and even if I did, the lakes are always changing it, especially in the winter.

The worst hurricane I went through was on Sept 20, ‘67. I googled it found out this: Hurricane Beulah spawned over 146 tornadoes. Wind gusts up to 136 mph and maybe even higher as the anemometer got bent back over 30 degrees. 27 inches of rain! Back in those days, they weren’t category numbering. I think Beulah would have been a 5.

Hi johnnydoc; If your weather changes so much, they should say “Chances for about everything today. ” That would be accurate.

Good night Akenta, Dry and whoever else has left. I’ve been trying to dry my laundry, but had to put the dryer on twice to do it. In my building with 6 floors, we have two washers, and two dryers for the whole building. Take a while some days to get thinkgs done.

Cleo I get some of those nice magazines given to me. Tonight, I read the flyer that came with my Reader’s Digest! LOL All beef recipes.

JFri. Do your appliances have deep voices too? Why not use your light saber to cook things?

100% chance of light in the morning? That’s good. I hate it when it gets darker in the morning, don’t you?

Shika, make sure you clean the lint trap really good. That will speed up the drying time. Use an old dryer sheet, it does a good job picking up the lint on the trap.

I started my movie and left my wife to watch it. I get irritated watching movies where people are fighting for their rights with big corporations. This movie got great reviews, but I should have known it would drive me bonkers. It is called Flash Of Genius and deals with the man that invented intermittent windshield wipers and his battle with Ford for credit.
