Back when I was a project coordinator, I had several older ladies who worked on my projects over fall and winter for a couple of years. My ADHD addled brain kept telling me one lady’s name was Joan. I kept calling her Joan. It wasn’t her name, but she had a sense of humor about it. The beginning of the 2nd or 3rd year, I studied the name list and really wanted to get her name right. I got cocky and said something along the lines of “And I finally remember your name. It’s Joan.” She smiled and replied “No, it’s still Joyce.” At the beginning of the next year I noticed she wasn’t in the group and I asked if anyone knew what she was up to. She had passed away the previous summer. That was over 15 years ago, and I’ve never forgotten her name—her real name. It’s Joyce.
