The Unusual for me this coming morning, if you can: just a cup of Thundering Steppes Coffee (dig into one of the sealed packages of CocoMocha Makings if you have to). I plan to head off on a shopping trip in early daylight.
@Lonewolf: I don’t eat breakfast this early in the morning (when I normally write), and when I do get up I’m typically headed somewhere else. But if Ladywolf could kindly have Lewreader’s Special Egg Omlette (complete with Frank’s Hot Sauce) ready to go with the Thundering Steppes Coffee at 7:00 AM CDT, I’d be much obliged.
@Ladywolf: Thanks for your consideration. Meanwhile my boss, Master Starbright, will be coming in after me later this morning (you’ll recognize him when you see him, unless he’s wearing his Cloak of Shadow). He’ll be wanting some CocoMocha, and he’d have breakfast too except that he really doesn’t need food or drink at all…
Little Sister I would like some scrambled eggs, bacon, a bagel with cream cheese & tomato juice please. Kitty would like scrambled eggs, raw steak and milk&beer.
May your day bring all the peace, joy and love that you desire.
Good morning LuvH8, Ladywolf, Lonewolf, Johanan and anyone else in today.
Ladywolf it looks like I’m too late to meet you for breakfast so if it’s OK with you I’ll just pick and graze at your excellent breakfast.. Great variety of ice cream, by the way. I think if I try really hard, I can leave some for others to share.
LADYWOLF I was going to have my namesake omelet when I realized

In honor of DOC TOON’S BIRTHDAY, the NUC COFFEE pipes will be extended world wide.
Morning TRIBE! I lied about the Nuc Coffee pipes. They ain’t even near New England yet. Psst, don’t tell anyone but I suspect Doc’s been sneaking an ice cream spoon to work.
I’m off work today, having picked up Taffy from the SPCA’s spay and neuter clinic this morning. She’s in good shape and a little active…but not bouncy like she usually is. I have some pain meds for her. I took the day off to be with her in case she gets uncomfortable. She is also microchipped. Right now she doesn’t want to stay in my lap, or for that matter, stay stil, but she’s not fully awake.
I’m taking advantage of the time to make some bean soup. Should be ready about 6pmish and I’ll wheel a vat into the BTchowdown room.
Ya’ll have a great day. I’ll be popping in here and there.
Doc you mentioned that LuvH8 kitty in the first picture doesn’t look too happy. It must be because he is sitting in front of all those nicely wrapped presents and he can’t see what’s inside.
Doc - Have you seen this one today?
http://comics.washingtonpost.com/11comicsone-big-happy.html
Okay, will one of you people fix that link for me please?
RwB - When I copy my url, it has underlines in the link, which is where I think it gets messed up. Then, when I tried to edit my post, I got the same thing as you. But I don’t think WP needs a login.
Rmom I went to the WP main page and tried to get into the comics that way and it asked for a login. Thought maybe that was what the problem was with the link.
Well, you got a functional one from Doc. Alls well.
RwB - Thanks for trying, and see if you can learn how. I’m a little too busy with homeschooling, paying bills, nagging sons, etc. to shift my mental energies that direction right now.
@Rmom: I either embed the links (not so hard: text goes in [ ]s, url in ()s, without spaces between, as here: [text](url).
Or, if I want the url to show, and has one or more underlines (why take chances?) I “disable” the underlines with a backslash (\), as this: gobbledygook\_yadda.com.
I was hoping to get on last night after Vespers, but that’s about when the thunderstorms started threatening. We even had a Tornado Watch about 9:00-9:30. It sounded exciting out there.
I think with my mind being so relaxed my thinking is not what it was.
Example yesterday the Admin. Assist was talking about copypaper and wanted to ask maintance about it, I totally forgot. Went on a walk after pt work then it hit me what was said, the Admin forgot to so I will remind today tell I remembered long afterward. Hopefully Admin Assist will remember because Admin has to stay ahead.
So to your answer I think but not sure.
Rmom, if you wanted to go to http://comics.washingtonpost.com/11_comics_one-big-happy.html, then it worked… (That is, The Washington Post, “One Big Happy”)
Rmom It works for me! (as bmonk said) I tried a link a long time ago - the link worked. (the words in brackets showed and did nothing, the URL in the parentheses showed and worked! Must of done something wrong as I thought it was done correctly. Will try again sometime.) I did get a picture to work, about time I started a PB account!
bmonk - Thanks! If you could see that comic, then I was successful. Thanks so much for distilling all the instructions down to just what I needed. I’m horrible with computer manuals - too many years of learning software straight from the programmer, and then just “trial & error” self-taught.
Sojo - I’m on PB, but I’m RRAmom there - I was here too, but shortened it to make it easier on everyone.
I find the easiest way to learn something–like the format guide–is to know it’s there, and then when I really want to do something, figure it out and use it several times until it clicks…and then wait until I want another tidbit.
bmonk - It might of been that. I thought of it at the time and checked it, as far as I could tell it was correct but it wasn’t or it would of worked. Thank you.
bmonk - Yep, if I’m forced to consult a computer manual, that’s my method. So much easier to retain the information if it doesn’t all go into short-term at the same time.
Terry - About the same - trying to keep the room from spinning & stay upright. After lunch, then it is back to Algebra. Had to take a med yesterday, might end up today, but waiting to see if it gets bad enough.
Terry - No driving today. Our oldest is going to drive a truck part over to his dad that got delivered yesterday. The youngest is still here, so I’m still on the “buddy system.”
bmonk - Yep, if I’m forced to consult a computer manual, that’s my method. So much easier to retain the information if it doesn’t all go into short-term at the same time.
That’s true enough, but there’s more: When something is relevant and I can use it immediately, I learn it much more quickly and thoroughly.
Which is why I then try to find more places (and reasons) to use it. Stretch the mind, keep it focused.
Just been having fun at I Write Like that was linked to over at Pibgorn. I evidently write like James Joyce and H.P. Lovecraft, plus others like Dan Brown and Stephen King.
(But the Dan Brown may be an error: that was directions on how to get to a place, and what to do once there. So the style was much more choppy, short sentences and factual than my normal style. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)
bmonk - I haven’t read Dan Brown, but if I remember correctly what he wrote about, I would assume you wouldn’t take the same viewpoint. Writing style? Well, since I haven’t read him, I wouldn’t know about that.
I just feel more like Martha - too many things to do with the hours I have available. I just try to make sure I reserve time to do as Mary.
Somebody help me. I asked DOC TOON for directions to his house so I could have some cake. Now I’m at the city landfill and they’re closed (no Alice jokes). His sister must be the redhead who gave me the same address four years ago. Guess I got to wait here till someone comes home.
No, Mr. Brown and I don’t exactly see eye to eye. I recall one Dan Brown plot generator, which generated plots that somehow always seemed to include the “Vatican conspiracy to take over the world”.
Now, I have a certain fondness for conspiracy theories, if they are well-baked, but really: the Vatican showed they can’t even run the Papal States, or a modern bank. How could they possibly run a conspiracy, or take over the world? No, the Church should stick to what we have at least a hope of doing (and where the Spirit will support us in our efforts): the salvation of souls.
bmonk - I had a feeling that Mr. Brown’s viewpoint wasn’t aligned with yours. You’ve got a point - when the Church overreaches what God wants them to do - they aren’t very good at it.
Here’s one of my thoughts about the result: what does it mean that my homilies are like Joyce, renowned for his incomprehensibility, or Lovecraft, known for his creepy horror? I’m not sure I really want to go there…
bmonk - I don’t know how the programe determines anything of course. It may not be better than a conversational item. At least it didn’t put me with someone I can’t stand.
bmonk - I just tried a different sample (written for a different audience, different topic) and it said I write like Isaac Asimov this time. Hummm. What does that mean?
bmonk - I have been told I’m extremely analytical.
Sojo - I probably should try that, but what I just did was to find 3 more samples to test it. They all came out as Stephen King. I haven’t written a lot on a regular basis (and saved the results), so that pretty much exhausts my recent samples. Maybe that explains why it is so horrifying for the males in my family to listen to me?
Sojo - Okay, now I tried an interesting experiment. I took a 3 paragraph sample (fairly long paragraphs). When I put all three paragraphs it said “Isaac Asimov”. I deleted the last of the 3 paragraphs, still Isaac. When I left only the first paragraph, it came up with “Chuck Palahniuk”. Who is HE?
Sojo - It would be interesting to see their list of authors. So far, none of them are writers I’ve read. (For fiction, I look for those from a Christian publishers - I prefer G-rated entertainment.)
I just kept using different texts from various things, including an old homily I had in my pocket, plus a text I made up ad hoc. Lovecraft and Joyce ran neck and neck, plus a few others (Stephen King and Dan Brown), which may have been a result of the genre.
Rmom, bmonk - One of my favourite authors is C.S.Lewis. His writing style changes with the audience he is writting to. It would be hard to put him into one category.
Just a quick marker as I’m off to try to find something for supper. Nothing around here sounds very interesting so I might just pass on supper altogether. Sorry I guess it’s just been a long and not too exciting day. Hope everyone else’s day was better.
@serenasakitty, I know how you feel. THere were days when it was 90+, and we had spareribs and boiled potatoes for dinner–Yegth! I just could not eat that heavy a meal.
On the basis of my latest speculative fiction text, I write like Stephen King. Well, that text was more horrific than usual (I mean in content, not in writing style).
On the basis of the prior chapter, I write like H.P. Lovecraft.
On the basis of this apologetics Commentary, I write like Dan Brown.
So much for statistical analysis of word usage. This only illustrates what I’ve been saying for a long time: one uses different vocabulary for different purposes, while remaining the same author. That pretty much puts most of liberal literary criticism of the Bible in the waste bin where it belongs.
Have fun, Terry!
Hi, Ladywolf!Johanan - You make some pretty valid points! I know I write differently, depending on the topic, the audience, and how many times I edit what I write. :)
Hi, Luv!Ladywolf - I second Grog’s advice!
Doc - When someone says “you’re only as old as you feel”, I usually say something about “I must be 80 then.”
Happy birthday Doc. I have had company visiting and I am sorry that I missed your big day. Fortunately, you have plenty of cuddle time on your end. Hope you had a good one buddy.

bmonk - Yep, if I’m forced to consult a computer manual, that’s my method. So much easier to retain the information if it doesn’t all go into short-term at the same time.
That’s true enough, but there’s more: When something is relevant and I can use it immediately, I learn it much more quickly and thoroughly.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
bmonk said “When something is relevant and I can use it immediately, I learn it much more quickly and thoroughly.”
How true!
bmonk over 14 years ago
Which is why I then try to find more places (and reasons) to use it. Stretch the mind, keep it focused.
Just been having fun at I Write Like that was linked to over at Pibgorn. I evidently write like James Joyce and H.P. Lovecraft, plus others like Dan Brown and Stephen King.
(But the Dan Brown may be an error: that was directions on how to get to a place, and what to do once there. So the style was much more choppy, short sentences and factual than my normal style. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
bmonk - I haven’t read Dan Brown, but if I remember correctly what he wrote about, I would assume you wouldn’t take the same viewpoint. Writing style? Well, since I haven’t read him, I wouldn’t know about that. I just feel more like Martha - too many things to do with the hours I have available. I just try to make sure I reserve time to do as Mary.
lewisbower over 14 years ago
Somebody help me. I asked DOC TOON for directions to his house so I could have some cake. Now I’m at the city landfill and they’re closed (no Alice jokes). His sister must be the redhead who gave me the same address four years ago. Guess I got to wait here till someone comes home.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Lew - I know he’s from Loveland, CO. Other than that, just listen for the sounds of women, cats & other pets.
bmonk over 14 years ago
George Arnold over 14 years ago
bmonk - I just did the I Write Like link and it said I write like Arthur Conan Doyle. Satisfies me, I liked the result!
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
bmonk - I had a feeling that Mr. Brown’s viewpoint wasn’t aligned with yours. You’ve got a point - when the Church overreaches what God wants them to do - they aren’t very good at it.
bmonk over 14 years ago
Here’s one of my thoughts about the result: what does it mean that my homilies are like Joyce, renowned for his incomprehensibility, or Lovecraft, known for his creepy horror? I’m not sure I really want to go there…
George Arnold over 14 years ago
bmonk - I don’t know how the programe determines anything of course. It may not be better than a conversational item. At least it didn’t put me with someone I can’t stand.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
bmonk - It said I write like Stephen King. It did happen to be an article I wrote about budgeting, so I guess that could fit into the horror genre.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - LOL!
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
bmonk - I just tried a different sample (written for a different audience, different topic) and it said I write like Isaac Asimov this time. Hummm. What does that mean?
bmonk over 14 years ago
A biochemist? You are very scientific in your organization? You are a polymath?
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - Try putting the same sample in again and see if it gives the same result. Maybe it generates answers at random!
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
bmonk - I have been told I’m extremely analytical.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Sojo - Okay, now I tried an interesting experiment. I took a 3 paragraph sample (fairly long paragraphs). When I put all three paragraphs it said “Isaac Asimov”. I deleted the last of the 3 paragraphs, still Isaac. When I left only the first paragraph, it came up with “Chuck Palahniuk”. Who is HE?
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - That might be! :-) I have also been told I tend to be too analyticl. I didn’t want to try it again incase it gave me results I didn’t like.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Sojo - It would be interesting to see their list of authors. So far, none of them are writers I’ve read. (For fiction, I look for those from a Christian publishers - I prefer G-rated entertainment.)
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - Chuck Palahniuk is someone who writes very short stories?
bmonk over 14 years ago
I just kept using different texts from various things, including an old homily I had in my pocket, plus a text I made up ad hoc. Lovecraft and Joyce ran neck and neck, plus a few others (Stephen King and Dan Brown), which may have been a result of the genre.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom, bmonk - One of my favourite authors is C.S.Lewis. His writing style changes with the audience he is writting to. It would be hard to put him into one category.
serenasakitty over 14 years ago

George Arnold over 14 years ago
Hello Johanan Hello ♠Lonewolf♠ - Hope you have a good night at pool league!
Rakkav over 14 years ago
On the basis of my latest speculative fiction text, I write like Stephen King. Well, that text was more horrific than usual (I mean in content, not in writing style).
On the basis of the prior chapter, I write like H.P. Lovecraft.
On the basis of this apologetics Commentary, I write like Dan Brown.
So much for statistical analysis of word usage. This only illustrates what I’ve been saying for a long time: one uses different vocabulary for different purposes, while remaining the same author. That pretty much puts most of liberal literary criticism of the Bible in the waste bin where it belongs.
