In German it’s just Mittwoch (“middle of the week”). Not very original. But Thursday is “Donnerstag”, named after the Germanic god of thunder Donar (or Thor).
.. and Friday was named for Odin’s wife Frigg. (for the record the days were named for Sunday (the Sun), Monday (the Moon), Tuesday (Tyr, Norse god of war and justice), Wednesday (Wodin or Odin), Thursday (Thor, Norse god of thunder), Friday (Frigg), Saturday (Saturn from the Latin, not Norse).

As the Goddess of marriage and motherhood, that’s a terribly unfair characterization.

Frigg actually seemed like a fairly decent person especially when compared to Hera.

So it got its name back in the Odin days. Some of you will be mighty Thor when you read this…
