Kids weren’t doing farm work and the military was having to spend too much time in PT to get them up to physical expectations. The 4 that couldn’t do the 2-1/2 mile run: 3 had pneumonia and one had a hidden heart defect.
Kennedy’s physical fitness programs were in response to a sad decline in fitness of America’s postwar, increasingly urban, population. I think we were urged to pull-up ourselves by our bootstraps or something equally bizarre. If my life had depended on doing a pull-up, I would have converted to some religion that believed in reincarnation. :)

Was trying to recall what all you had to do… sit-ups, pullups, running, a baseball throw and some sort of jump I recall.
