According to the movie Poltergeist, the whole thing was about a haunting. (Spoiler) The house was built over a cemetary, so the ghosts were associated with the place (haunting) and not a particular person (poltergeist). But then, stories that make sense were never Spielberg’s forte.

This is wrong. A poltergeist is a ghost (geist) that makes noise (polter=knocking). A poltergeist would NOT pass gas.
