Royal Navy Captain Matthew Flinders was an explorer who, by sailing completely around Australia in 1802-03 proved it was a continent. There are a number of statues in memory of him and his cat, Trim, who accompanied him on his voyages.
Given feline curiosity and the desire of cats to explore everything, it’s completely fitting that Trim is memorialised along with his human friend and caregiver.
There are at least 5 books about Trim and Flinders: Trim: Being the True Story of a Brave Seafaring Cat, Trim, the Cartographer’s Cat, A Cat Called Trim, The Captain and the Cat, and Matthew Flinders’s Cat
A memorial plaque at the New South Wales State Library:
TO THE MEMORY OF
TRIM
The best and most illustrious of his race
The most affectionate of friends,
faithful of servants,
and best of creatures
He made the tour of the globe, and a voyage to Australia,
which he circumnavigated,
and was ever the delight and pleasure
of his fellow voyagers
Written by Matthew Flinders in memory of his cat

Going to get another cat when I get back from a trip. Wonder if I can get the next one to ride. Take ’em on vacation?

When it comes to our indebtedness to the ancient Egyptians even the great pyramids don’t compare to that of the cat.

We had a cat that liked myrrh. He would ask for it by name.
