I think you should advise him to check the risks of what he wants to do, then let him go ahead. If he’s right then he can buy you a car, if he’s wrong then he is older and wiser. Win/win.

Well, I’ve been selling my MtG and Pokémon cards and I’ve earned a bit over 8,000€ and still have plenty to sell, but I had kept them since the 90s (the oldest Magic cards I still have might be 10 years old) and probably I spent more buying booster cards than I’ll earn back. So no, it isn’t a good nor a fast way to make money.
