I used to have to run into things to stop when in-line skating. The street curb, a tree, a car, fence, etc. I saw someone skating the other day. A rare sight these days.
A guy stopped me on the street one day in Venice Beach after seeing me do a crash-stop into a telephone pole, while I was skating. He spent five minutes showing me how to drag-brake with one skate. He was running late for work but said he would have felt responsible if he found later I’d been killed by a truck. Good guy.

I never got the hang of roller skating and never even tried ice skating.
