I once watched a little boy try to swim across a private pool (no lifeguard, of course) packed with kids and adults. He ran out of steam half-way across and began to flounder. His dad was just a few feet away, but he was playing with some other kids and never noticed his son was in trouble. I tried calling to him, but everybody was laughing and shrieking, and he couldn’t hear me. I was contemplating jumping in myself (fully clothed), when another parent swam over to give the boy a hand. Lexie is responsible for the lives of a bunch of heedless kids who don’t have any idea of the dangers awaiting them—she’d better be “The Kraken” just to keep them alive.

She’s not there to make friends. (Being tough shows she cares.)
Hopefully she’ll still be able to show some friendliness.

Stay off the rope! Somebody may swim into the deep end without realizing it, and it makes the floats fill with water more quickly.

She is letting everyone know that she’s the boss and either behave or get out. Novel concept in this life and times
