The novelist, John Masters, described seeing some soldiers sent into a cave in Waziristan (I think) on anti-bandit operations when he was an officer of the 4th Prince of Wales Own Ghurkha Rifles: when the soldiers emerged after a minute they appeared to be wearing black trousers, but were actually covered in fleas from the cave. That’s an aspect of living in caves that isn’t often mentioned.
