What’s with those pink people and dogs in the first panel? Is that a primitive form of motion capture for comic strip artists which wasn’t drawn over?

The lack of detail gives the impression of distance. It’s a bit odd because the size is so large; it would work better with a wider shot. Also the colour is not ideal; I suppose that it’s supposed to be washed out by the bright sun behind us, but that doesn’t fit with the vivid greens in the background (and then panel 3 is inconsistent, with washed-out dogs in the distance but shadowed humans up close).
