I know NFL players can get cut out of “guaranteed” contracts after any season if the teams doesn’t think the player is worth the money, but don’t the players get paid off in full if they get injured on the field?
Isn’t the professional American Flag Football League set to roll out in 2025? Between that and the presence of flag football in the 2028 Olympic Games in L.A., maybe there could eventually be a transition to flag instead of contact football at the school levels. I realize there would be a lot of pushback, but it’s possible, especially if the players supported the change…
What the strip leaves unsaid is that any human being on earth should be able to live in comfort for the rest of their lives after recieving $50 million in a single year.
I heard Steve Smith Sr. on ESPN radio last week talking about the fact that they get paid to do “what normal people can’t do” and basically preaching the Cult of the Athlete. I so wanted to call in and say, “You’re getting paid to be an entertainer, nothing more.”
They would have cut my call off had I gone on to say “oh, and ‘normal people’ would lose their jobs and probably go to prison for felony assault if they put someone in the hospital after punching them out in a meeting.”
Quite a few players are getting out early before the worst injuries happen. And once you’re out, your team still owes you the rest of the money you signed for
So stay in the game even after getting concussed too many times, at least you’ll be able to afford the best memory care unit when you start having dementia and other symptoms at too early of an age.
Brett Farve just testified to Congress that he has Parkinson’s so take that info for what you will since he played pre-concussion protocols and got drugged up on the sideline routinely to play a near-record consecutive games.

I think an injury is a more practical reason to retire. Still, I wonder what the players do when the season is over.

If they’ve had three concussions, they don’t have enough brainpower left to make that decision.

How many non-professional sports players reading this comic have made $50 million so far in your career, or expect to by retirement?
