“If you came by bus, you must leave by bus” – that was what I was told one late afternoon when waiting hours for the bus replacement to take us home when my home was on top of the mountain behind the elementary school. In front of the school was a road that hugged the base of the mountain on one side with a desolate swamp and river that was beginning to flood on the other aggravating the bus scheduling. Sure, the dirt path up the mountain was steep and treacherous – even more so in the rain – but I was missing out on my favorite afternoon cartoons!
How do Red and Ruby attend the same public elementary school in the suburbs, but ride different buses? Every place I’ve lived, ONE elementary school encompasses ONE neighborhood, and no one rides a bus.
My ‘special needs’ son went to a friend’s home after school one year, he was in 1st grade. He didn’t tell me and the bus driver didn’t question him… I was frantic.
Uh… no, no one’s going to arrest the bus driver for kidnapping. Who would even make the accusation? Mom already knows. His regular bus driver now knows. Anyone at the school who sees him boarding the wrong bus can talk to him and, if needed, call his house.

Not the way it used to be. I suppose this is better.

A change is as good as arrest.
