You don’t lie you say “That is not flattering” or “That is not the look you want” If they ask why, then you can say, “Because you are fat!” If they get mad ask them, “Would you rather me tell you or go out in public looking bad.”
“You are a much better judge of that than I am, dear. I always see you as the day we married.” It may only work once, though…
It may also be OK to lie in defense of someone else.
