McLuhan pointed out that books were the content of movies. Movies were the content of television. Books remain the basis for televisions ideas. Sorry.
Lately Comics are the content of Movies (not to mention cartoons). If the derivative content is downgrading does this explain the context for our societal decline.
Far too often, multi-tasking is the ability to work on several tasks simultaneously (or rapidly switch from task to task), without ever completing any of them. XD
I guess depends on what is on TV and viewers. There are shows I don’t watch and comics I don’t read. Where as books depends on how thick, takes a while for me to read. Others who are fast readers will speed through.
I missed some of the old shows but the some of the old shows will not fit into today’s society of somewhat tastes.
Bill Cosby’s shows those are classics. I’ve heard what Bill Cosby’s talks about and wish teenagers would listen.
Netflix has been my constant companion this past year. I have recorded enough good shows to watch when they go into reruns next summer, but when watching a good BBC series, everything has to wait until I’ve watched the last episode. However, I’m getting carpal tunnel syndrome from reading the comments on the comics. Anyone know where I can get Zits with comments? My paper has it, so only want to read comments about it.
Wow… “At six thoughts per minute” If Calvin were to pop off an answer to a math question in class that fast Ms. Woomwood would trip over her knee socks right after she was knocked out of them!
Cable television is a lollipop for the brain. Sure wish they would bring back the BBC series “Fawlty Towers” - it would make me laugh so hard I would get an asthma attack…
khpage:
You can get “Fawlty Towers” on DVD. I get Acorn magazine or you can get it at acornonline.com. They have many of the BBC DVD ‘s and other interesting items from England.
I switch to the computer when the television commercials come on. The commercials make my mind melt.

I think it was when psychedelic drugs became illegal that interest rose sharply in TV’s and PC’s, but they were a poor substitute for the real stuff.

Just like I do…. More ideas come from TV than from books I can say that as a fact.
zeina123 almost 15 years ago
Grazer, that is probably the most clever thing i have heard in a long time….. But i would rather have a laptop on my lap while i’m watching TV

grazer: Love that comment… playing games, watching movies, what have you… :) zeina123: That has to be the ultimate in multi-tasking… lol

That’s about like me, paperbucket.. I worked on airliners for 35 years and never once solved a quadratic equation, or needed to ,or that matter.

Hey, now! Television programming is ….um…..um… responsible for the increasing number of people reading good books.
BTW - Do not let your children watch the news. They may get ideas.

some of the people i worked with had attention spans similar to that, you had to retrain them every 6 months to do a repetitive job
Lonewolf :
i was able to do that for a little over 40 years when i was with the government (department of defense)

PC: Create content, potentially just this side of heaven.
TV: Receive content, usually right out of the sewer pipe.
That’s why I have two laptops and no TV. (On occasion, I’ll pull something out of my DVD collection and play it on one of the laptops.)

Yeah, but Doc, there are cartoons on TV. And I still watch the Flintstones, Scooby Doo and Jetsons after all these years.
