Van Gogh tried lots of different styles of painting, all with an eye towards the commercial market. He tried impressionism, portraiture, water colors, etc. he even did a couple of paintings in a Japanese style. All before essentially giving up on being successful and starting to do those layered oil-still lives and landscapes for which he later became posthumously famous.

Don’t knock Van Gogh; he had a fantastic memory! Everything he heard went in one ear.
