When I was a kid, a playmate and I were coloring in a coloring book. When he showed his work to his grandmother, asking, “Isn’t this pretty?”, the old b!tch snapped his head off for going outside the lines! I remember being relieved that I stayed inside the lines.
My parents gave my sisters and me an allowance. When I was little (remember this is the 1950s) I got a penny a week allowance. This amount grew as I got older, prices increased, and I was suppose to buy specific types of things with it. As a result of this I became very good at managing money (then again, I am an accountant in a family of accountants) – which allowed my husband to quit his job in his mid 50s when he was burned out at work.
He did not get an allowance – if he wanted something and his parents agreed he got it, if they did not – he did not get the item. No training at all in managing money when he was young against when he was grown. (So, yes, I am in charge of our money.)

Why not just let her do the baseboards in her own bedroom, Adam?

“Impressionist?” Katy, I think the words you’re really looking for are ABSTRACT “artist.”
