Is it a correct assumption, that British and European police are often seen patrolling on foot, whereas American police are only ever seen in their cars?
People from Europe forget how big the US is and with our car culture how sprawling our cities are. I once worked for a Dutch company. When the Dutch Masters (sorry, couldn’t pass that up) came over for a review of our operation (I ran a major Salt Mine in Cleveland, OH) they questioned me about our transportation costs. I told them that my market area along the Great Lakes was from Duluth, MN in the West to Montreal, Canada in the East. That is the equivalent of the distance from Copenhagen to the end of Sicily. Yes my transportation costs were high because America is a huge country. If you had to ship 20,000 tons of salt from Copenhagen to Sicily you costs would be high too.
This is why you don’t see American cops on foot patrol except in very special circumstances. Another reason is that due to our gun culture our police require immediate access to personal armor and more firepower than just a hand gun. These are available in their cars and are not practical to carry on foot.
Sigh. . . . Sometimes I despair for my country. Will we ever learn?

This strip paints a very old fashioned world in the UK.
Gone are the days when we saw police walking the beat.
…and gone are the days when this strip was funny.
