My kids had to walk a little over a mile to attend school, came home for lunch, walked back to school then walked home again! Until we moved to a different county, there was school buses to pick them up and take them home.
So, every morning it was hurry~scurry just to get to the end of the driveway! ☺️☺️☺️
My kids had to walk over half a mile to catch the school bus. I always told them I had to walk two miles uphill both ways in the snow. One day we were on a road trip and passed through my old hometown. Stopped to look at my old house then I showed them my school. It was a block away. They were so mad. :D
What’s a bus? What’s a school? We lived in the sticks. School was in local Church 6 miles away. One teacher taught 5 grades 1-5. Kids had to take mule and wagon to school or walk. Most schools half days. 8am – 11:30am. Kids had to get back home to Farm work. Few Kids ever got beyond 5th grade unless parents were batter off economic wise. Some children got sent to family living else where to get an education. My mother taught school in that church. 1952 a brick school was built with grades 1 – 8 taught. It was big time for our area.
My child was lucky. Her school started just at the right time that I could drive her when she was in high school. Before that, she was closer to home and walked. She could have taken a bus to middle and high school but never did.
i was sprinting to try to catch up to the school bus i’d just missed when our cocker spaniel came running up from behind and got in between my legs. i didn’t catch the bus. i did spend the rest of the day at school in torn pants, bleeding from the gash in my knee. still have the scar on my knee…
Mom’s subtle way of telling him to get a move on, as well her not-so-subtle way of telling him that he won’t be getting a ride to school if he misses the bus.
Also reminded me of the classic riddle, “What’s big and red and eats rocks?”

It’d be “Ha” to you Mom, if you lived here, it’d be a “Snow Day”. No school!
