I was guilty of being an enabler, and I’m still not sure if I did the right thing…
While waiting in line at the cash register, a young kid (around 10 I think) was all excited to buy a toy. Heard him tell another kid who was with him that he had been doing extra chores and saving money to buy this toy for months (quite a long time for a youngster). But when the cashier rang it up there was tax – which the kid hadn’t realized. He only had enough money for the price of the toy. He was almost crying when the cashier told him that he couldn’t buy the toy.
The tax was less than $2. I reached over the kid’s shoulder and paid the tax. The cashier thanked me… the kid didn’t seem to know what to do, but he was happy to get his toy. Not sure if the kid needed some manners, or if he was intimidated by me (I look like a big ol’ Bubba). I hope the kid learned something about “paying it forward”.
