I was in Ireland last year, came across a book on leprechauns, found out why they tend to be bad tempered: apparently, there are no female leprechauns.
For those unaware, cubic zirconia measures at around 8.5 on the hardness scale, compared to diamond’s 10. But, a CZ can cut glass, and, essentially, only a gemologist can tell by looking at one, that it is not a diamond. CZ’s tend to throw more rainbow colors, whereas diamonds throw a white light. CZ’s are also heavier than (about 65% more) diamonds, but, one would obviously have to be weighed to know, for sure.

Yes, today is the most appropriate day to give someone a fake diamond.
There are other days like that as well, mainly revolving around food:
Feb 2-You gotta eat pork sausage-Groundhog Day (that’s what pork sausage is: ground hog)
March 14-eat pizza (it has to be round)-Pi day
March 15-eat Caesar Salad-The Ides of March
March 17-give your girl an artificial diamond
There may be more, but I can’t think of any.
