My mom let go, I went down the neighbor’s driveway into the street, along the street to the next driveway and back up onto the sidewalk. She held the bike while I remounted and I never waivered after that. Being on the street was scary, cause it was a main street. Lucky for me no traffic.
My first bike was a mid-sized Schwinn. Too big for me at 5. No training wheels. No help. Pile of dirt at the end of the driveway (unpaved street) got me high enough to get on and go as far as the first crash. Drag the bike back and try again. It eventually worked. Huge jump in freedom when I could ride to Grandma’s house 3 blocks away. And amazing bliss to find concrete or smooth surface to ride on.
My dad did the same with me. Back in the mid 60’s they didn’t have small bikes for kids so we learned on a big bike. After a few times going up and down the sidewalk, daddy let go and I was scared and thrilled at the same time. I did the same with my girls too.

My dad did that when I was a kid on my first bike. The crutch (him) was mental but it worked.
