In 2008, the total bacon and ham production in Great Britain was 162,300 tonnes. At a density slightly over that of water, that’s a cube of 53 metres side length.
World production of pork (let’s assume it’ll all be made into ham) is about 100 million tonnes. That’s a solid cube of ham with a size of 450 metres.
LibrarianInTraining - hate to break it to you, because I’ve lived there and know how you guys feel about yourselves… but in the greater scheme of things, Broward County is actually kind of a tiny, unimportant place. The majority of us actually like Swiss with our ham sandwiches.
first, get a giant sheet of waxed paper and wrap it up…(dont forget the giant dill pickle!)
next, get a crane and load it in ship equipped with refrigeration…
next ,set sail to…..oh…. say Ethiopia…..
next unload the wrapped sandwich) onto a truck….
transport it to the first village……
yep! youre right ..
you’re gonna need a bigger sandwich
OK, I respect that some of you have weird tastes… er, I mean, prefer something other than Swiss cheese with ham, but I contend that if the ham is worth eating, it should not have to compete with a strong or spicy cheese.
American Cheese is not cheese. It is a “Pasteurized Process Cheese Food.” It says so, right on the wrapper.
And in the case of cheese, “Pasteurized” seems to mean “Plastisized.”
American Cheese is the only cheese I won’t eat.
Last week I was in a Subway shop in Sacramento. The menu clearly listed Cheddar and Monterey Cheddar. I asked for Monterey Cheddar on my sub, and was told, “It’s shredded, is that OK?”
I shouldv’e known it would be a mix of Cheddar and Monterey Jack.
I should’ve said, “Yes.”
But instead I asked for regular cheddar, and was told “We don’t have any yellow cheese. We get it before it’s dyed.”
“Would you like White American?”
I went with Provolone, and I might never go to Subway again.
Tedlogon, there is actual American cheese that is cheese. You need only check the labels. It’s basically a cheddar that hasn’t been given any real time to age.
Ted, BlueRaven: Yes, that’s true. There was a deli in Avalon, NJ, when I was growing up that had “fresh from the farm” American Cheese. It tasted completely different from the Kraft Singles we have to settle for today, too.
Go, Tedlogdon!
But I think the words on the packaging describe it as “pasteurized processed cheese product”.
BTW, ever wonder where sawdust ends up? Read the labels of any grated cheese and you’ll find cellulose.
These are not foods.
White American Cheese? Don’t go there. Almost had a riot on a city bus years ago, because some pinhead misinterpreted that phrase.
I didn’t say Broward County was important. Only that Laspada’s was. And they’re no longer in just Broward. They just opened their first shop in Boca Raton.

Not everyone likes fish.
Then again…not everyone’s religion permits them to eat ham, either…

Give a man some beef, and he will eat for today. Teach a man to beef, and he’ll be ignored.

Cheddar, Muenster, or American with ham. Never Swiss. Swiss with roast beef, corned beef, or pastrami.
