It’s not even that. It’s just the lack of belief in a god.
The prefix “A-” means not or without. Theism means belief in a god. Dead-set belief that there absolutely isn’t any god would be antitheism, not atheism.
Personally, I don’t form beliefs around things until I have evidence for them, which is all that atheism is about, really.
Not quite. “Atheism” is the belief that there isn’t any god. “Agnosticism” is the position that one does not know, because one does not have evidence, and thus one suspends both belief and disbelief.
@exoticdoc2You’re mistaken. It’s most people who claim to have religious beliefs “ignore facts and evidence in favor of their philosophical beliefs.” You got it bass ackwards.
Hmm. Too soon for “a thousand points of light.” Star Wars (space-based missile defense)? Astrological dabblings (with Joan Quigley)? Must be the latter….
@stephensalaunI suppose I shouldn’t (1) discuss religion, and (2) discuss it on a Holy day. You likely chose your faith over other faiths because the others did not conform to what you believe.
Confirm the true stories in the Bible? What about the stories which aren’t true? Somewhere in the O.T. is the story about somebody commanding the sun to stop in the sky to enable enough daylight to determine a battle’s outcome. That was written by a human who didn’t know the Earth orbits the sun. Or, if that was an idiom such as “raining cats and dog”, it means the Bible shouldn’t be taken literally, as some believe it should be.
Thanks, Peter Gerlach. Yes, there are at least 3 opinions of Judaism, at least 2 opinions of Islam, at least 2 opinions of Buddhism, at least 3 opinions of Christianity. Among the opinions of Protestants there are many opinions among Baptists, and at least two among Methodists. There is more than one version of the Bible. And so whose version are we to believe? Whose is better/holier than others? I believe in the version of non-humans, i.e., who gives a good gosh darn.
And, incidentally, I stay about 25 miles away from Hell, MI.
The New Testament was selected by the Council of Nicea to fit the political objectives of Emperor Constantine. All the other books were burned, except for those that were hidden.
@stephensalaunYour choice echos what Black4dder mentioned: Mine’s right and the others are wrong. But please don’t take it personal. I imagine we’re all like that in some ways. Interesting discussion we’re having today. I hope the weather today is as well for you as it is here.

During the 1960s there was a saying: “There is no LBJ; I’m an atheist.”
