Strange as it sounds, fresh-ground black pepper on vanilla-bean ice cream is wonderful! The cold suppresses the heat of the pepper, but the pepper’s tang multiplies the sweetness and fragrance of the ice cream. No lie!

Odd that. My aunt claims that soy sauce on vanilla ice cream produces a flavour much like butterscotch. I haven’t the nerve to experience it for myself. Far too counterintuitive.

I visited an ice cream parlor in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which offered many strange flavors like Kaffir Lime, Malted Burnt Sugar, and Malted Banana, and they had Black Pepper once. Very, very good, but certainly unexpected. But then think of Pfeffernusse cookies, which are the same sort of thing.

I sprinkle freshly ground white pepper on lightly-sugared strawberries when I make shortcakes.
