Akenta, Happy Tuesday!
Tabby, Hope you have a much better day today. :)
DAAAH STRIP Dusty, I’ll believe it when I see it! I believe you are all bark and no bite. Remember your date with Paris?
Morning tribe! It was a wild night we experienced, but (I think) we made it through okay. You know the wind is strong when you can see the house moving, and the windows flexing. I heard there were “several small tornadoes” in my county, but so far, only tree damage reported. Further to the west, a historic building lost its roof. More than one semi-truck got blown over while driving. We lost our internet, then our power for about and hour. I figured the internet wouldn’t be back this morning, but amazingly, it is!
We have some cute little bunnies in our neighbourhood - they and the deer are hated about equally by the gardners! One of the neighbours actually feeds them but luckily, unlike in Victoria, the predators are around enough to keep the numbers down.
RMom I don’t know if I could live in tornado country but we on the west coast are always concerned about the big earthquake.
The suburb I grew up in once passed a cat leash law. Within a few years, the squirrels and rabbits were going crazy. Dad had to get a little air pistol (.17 cal) to keep them down to reasonable numbers. That’s the problem when there are no natural predators.
We have a similar problem in our local National Park (Teddy Roosevelt) with the elk herd.
Dawn - At least to get away from a tornado, all I have to do is head to the basement. Plus, we have enough warning in time to take cover. The biggest advantage of tornadoes compared to earthquakes & hurricanes, is that the damage is limited to a fairly small area. Two nights ago, a house got hit, but their workshop that was close by didn’t. Therefore, people who weren’t affected by the storm are quick to offer help. I’ve never had a family member or a friend get their house destroyed by a tornado, but I know two families who have experienced significant damage due to hurricanes. (They lived in FL at the time.) It is a really small number of homes that get damaged due to storms in KS, unless you count hail storms, and that is usually confined to the exterior of a house. It is just that you don’t want to be above ground, if you happen to be in the path of a tornado, so we take cover. Death rates are quite low now that the meterologists & the media get the warnings out in sufficient time, and most of the population know what they’re supposed to do in the case of a tornado. (Most deaths occur because they think “it won’t happen to me”.)
on my way to babysit. only have the baby today and he is fine. i walked with her last night and she told me it was not my fault bc she knows me and that i feel like C r a p for it happening. she says she loves me and it was not me. she chewed the middle boy up and spit him out. thing was in trouble. the baby was doing okay, he has a headache, but that is to be expected. the older two are gone for the week to spend time with there dad. oh and the kids mom also didnt blame me. so i am babysitting for the best people in the world. well i have to get going they are waiting for me. peace and love all.
Akenta happy Tuesday
cleo wanna come water my yard? we have been rain free for three weeks this week. :(
bmonk - One of the “windy” jokes about KS is that the airports don’t use windsocks - they use wind chains. A piece of twine swaying would be considered a calm day here.
You know it was windy…
When the flag pole at the fire station points north. (Actually happened - twice! The 2nd time, they replaced the pole with a much larger diameter pole.)
@cleo, yestre you spoke about the guy who invented the intermittent circuit for windshield wipers; just last month I met his divorced wife. The court case was a farce: the lawyers for Ford or Crysler (I forget which) argued that the circuit was just electronic components, none of which were new and so not patentable. In response, the inventor’s lawyer began reading from Tale of Two Cities, asking which word was new and therefore copyrightable.
We have a local municipal airport, errr, a grassy strip with two tie-downs and a windsock. Once a year, they put up a new windsock. That, plus the annual rent, makes for a cheap airport. And the owner gets to grow hay on it to boot!
bmonk We’ve got one of those in our housing development. The owner flies too frequently, to let the prairie grass grow enough to bale, but it could if he didn’t keep it mowed. There are a lot of grass airstrips around Wichita - many of the airplane employee clubs give members highly discounted flying lessons. Coupled with a lot of treeless flat ground, it isn’t difficult for a private pilot to have his/her own runway.
Hi Joy! Hope you have a nice cruise.
I’ll be back much later. 2 hour treatment today.
RRAmom and Tabby, glad everything worked out for the both of you.
DRY You can pick on me and Cleo! But I’ll be gone after Wednesday for a few days to vist my mom and sister. My sister’s B-day was May 22nd. Just a tad late in getting my gift to her and taking her out for dinner! Between her schedule and mine, even our emails take forever. Her’s is worse though.
I realize I’m late today. If I’m gone when anyone comes back, I’ll be at my appointment for the afternoon. I have one tomorrow afternoon too. Always something thesse days, but not a lot at the same time.
Marg are you still around? the lady i was babysitting for, knows her kids and that they are always trying to kill one another. lol she is my best friend. the lady i was chicken sitting for. she understands and she loves me still and im not band from her kids. :D
I’ve been so busy lately it is crazy. just realized that i have several friends birthdays this week. and im going crazy.
Just so nobody needs worry, yes, there is a tornado spotted not too far from us here in Real Life–but it is heading more or less away from us, with a little bit of English to the side. Oddly, it’s heading northwest, not towards the east like a well behaved tornado…
Oh, just missed you tabby, but you prolly need some rest too. Gotta keep ahead of babies and chickens!
I did change to a dramatic “anvil” thunderhead–although right now, we are just under a gray sky of various darknesses. Still, we do get some nice views of thunderboomers at times.
bmonk - Keep informed and safe!!! The meterologists here are saying that now hot weather has arrived (100+ tomorrow), that the tornado risk is heading north. Since you live north of me, I guess you’ll start having the bad weather now, instead of me. I hope you have a basement?
Tabby: I need a nap, but my husband is taking apart the kitchen sink and lifting it out in preparation for a new sink, so I think I’d better stay awake until that is done.
bmonk: Are tornados common in your area? CO has been getting tham lately, and I thought that they were an unusual occurrence there.
We get some every year, but not as many as, say, Kansas-Nebraska, or Texas. It’s from the cool Canadan air meeting the warm, wet Gulf Coast air. Most storms head east: Northeast or Southeast. Every so often we get one going backwards, towards the west. A few years back, the Bismarck-Mandan area had 5 or 6 tornados going northwest on November 2nd!
@margueritem, if your hubby works as fast as some contractors, and you want to stay awake until he’s done, you could be up all week! doc has some coffee that might help… :-)
bmonk, he’s already got it out, and it’s in the garage. We’ll take it to Habitat for Humanity, along with the old counter tops. It’s wonderful to have a husband that’s handy.
bmonk, cool avatar! I’ve always been fascinated with the weather! Of course, if I lived in tornado territory, I’m sure I’d feel different. My dad was in one when he was a little boy, his dad was a traveling preacher (and a newspaper editor and… you name it) They were in Oklahoma, I believe. They went into their cellar and it passed right over them!
Naah, tornados are fascinating even when you live up here. As RRAmom said 6 eventful hours ago, there’s really no need for people to die, unless they have inadequate shelter, because they get warnings out quite well, with plenty of time to get under cover. More people die these days, I think, when they try to get videos of the weather, or think, “It’s not coming here.” Maybe if we had more tornados, we’d get more tired of them.
Besides, I agree with Rmom: it’s not like a wildfire or hurricane or earthquake that hits such a wide swath of territory. A tornado is quite limited in its effect.
@Margueritem, I remember a few in Chicagoland too. Tinley Park, about 1986?
Just looked it up: On 4/21/1967, a category 4 (max. wind speeds 207-260 mph) tornado 6.9 miles away from the village center killed 33 people and injured 500 people and caused between $5,000,000 and $50,000,000 in damages.
I was a young boy then; when we went to see the debris some days later, it was still quite impressive…
For anyone interested, this map gives a pretty good idea of where tornadoes are most common in the lower 48: http://www.isws.illinois.edu/atmos/statecli/Tornado/us-1950-2004.gif (It gives the tracks of recorded tornados from 1950 to 2004, so 55 years.)
bmonk, it hit Oak Lawn. I was a sophomore in college at the time, and one of our friends lived in Oak Lawn. His parents and his house were OK, fortunately. I believe that the day was a Friday.
Hello Everyone!
I’ve been catching up on the comics and news. We’re about to get a thunderstorm. I think it’s that time of the year when we get one almost every afternoon.
Marg, I’m not too wrung out yet. Maybe by Thursday it will hit me. I was in Chicago when we had a bad storm hit downtown, I think it was in ‘92. They had the big celebration in the park, Taste of Chicago (?). Anyway, everyone had to run for cover at the park. I was on the 9th floor of a building and when I saw my co-workers standing at the windows, I told them they needed to stay away because a window might bust out. They thought I was crazy until at that moment a window (or two) busted out across the street. Papers were flying all over the place. Also, the Sears Tower which was also across the street lost 2 or 3 windows too. Glass and papers flying everywhere.
bmonk: The new sink and counter tops are coming at 8:30 tomorrow morning. I just helped him take the old counter top off. We did the tear down ourselves and saved $250.
Carmy, I’ve not been in a tornadic storm when near windows, but I remember being in one near the Missouri River. The plate glass windows were flexing in the storm winds, and we all hurried to a more protected place. Luckily, none of the windows cracked, but elsewhere some roof rocks (about 1-2 inch diam.) were sent through windows, and a cinder-block wall around a air-conditioning plant was torn down. Still, it was exciting to see!
bmonk: That’s a great map. I see that the eastern part of CO gets a lot of tornados, and that they even get some in CA. The western states don’t get that many compared to the rest of the country.
Tinley Park is close to Oak lawn, so it may have done some damage there, too.
I think it’s interesting how altitude affects tornadoes. Note how the Appalachians and the Ozarks are lighter, and the similar pattern when you hit the Rockies, as in Colorado and Wyoming.
I found that interesting too, bmonk.
I have only been in one tornado, and it was a “straight-line” tornado. The wind speed was mild, compared to some, (80mph) I think. Gusts were stronger.
When I was in high school, we were sitting in the living room of some friends of my parents. They had one of those 1950s modern houses with the picture window that went all the way down to the floor. I looked out the window and the top of a small tree in their front yard was going in a circle. Next lawn chairs and garbage cans started flying down the street. My Mom said, “Look at the car!” Our car was parked next to the house, and it was lifted off of the driveway a foot or two. Our ears popped. We all just sat there stunned and it was over. The car windows had scratches in them caused by flying gravel, and a neighbors garage was moved two feet off of its foundation. A huge oak tree was torn up in the local park. It was referred to as a ‘big wind’, because no one saw a funnel cloud. I still say it was a tornado.
Marg That sounds like the tornado going through my home town in Iowa in the late 60s. We lived at one of the highest points in town so it skipped right over us, but rooted trees down 1st Av (the main drag) for miles. Very little other property damage though.
Shika “Scarred” is what I meant but I agree…either will work. And you probably should be worried about me, but not for the reasons you may think. giggle
Well, I spent the day in town with the major goal of my trip to stop chipmunks, squirrels and raccoons from emptying my bird feeders of all the expensive seed. they have been tearing them down or just plain scarfing up the food overnight and with the squirrels and chipmunks, all day long. We’ll see it all the expensive additions hinder them even in the slightest.
Probably too late posting this, but when I was working as Head Teller, (don’t know what they are called now!) on Ft. Bragg Army Base, they had storm warnings out and a tornado warning as well. It was a military pay day so you can imagine HOW BUSY we were!! The teller lines were stacked up out the door! Anyway, when we closed the doors at 12 noon for the lunch break, we discovered a tornado had landed across the street and blown the roof off our competitive bank rival First Citizens Bank. No one was hurt thank goodness! We didn’t even notice or hear it because we were so busy!!!
cleo, what are you compaining about? I put up a rabbit proof wire round “thingy” around my last remaining cauliflowers and the little B A S T A R D S (rabbits) still got in there and chewed one off. And it had to have been a baby one because those cages were wound tight! I want to plant beans, but I think that will be a losing battle! LOL
JFri, yea but I just glanced quick at all the comments since I was at work! You know, the job I get paid for while I’m on here!!!! I’ll go back quick and check!
Where are you going for dinner? It’s 9:15 here, so 6:15 out there? Eat some for me, I haven’t had supper (dinner) yet and I’m starving! Something hot and spicy please!
johnnydoc, yeah if the rabbits are afraid of your dog! Before we lost our Charlie Girl, she would bark at them and they’d leave, but she wasn’t outside alll the time and somehow they figured that out! I think my rabbits are overthrows from Overboard! Me and Charlie are fighting the same battle, but my rabbits aren’t near as BIG!! LOL! And I’m still losing the battle!
Hi Dry! Sounds like everyone but us gals are in tornado land now that RRAmom is safe and sound orm one.
Hi Doc You really think those expensive contaptions will work? Not if those rodents are anything like toon rodents. Since you are DoctorToon, I’d bet on it.
Good night everyone. My friend has come back to my game for a month to visit me, so I’ll probably switch my addiction back to there until his visit is over.
I’ll check in here in the mornings and evenings to make sure everyone is ok.
Shika - no, I am here. I got involved in some yard work and a conversation with a buddy in LA. My dog does a good job of keeping the ground animals away. It is tough though with ones that can hop from tree to tree. I swear though, when we came home from Seattle after leaving the garage doors open, that cleo was in the garage with the raccoon eating the dog food the raccoon had tipped over.
Oh doc! You make me laugh!! I have one cat like that, she will run and jump and chase after crazy things, one that’s a normal cat, and one that thinks she’s the Queen Bee!
I thought the severe weather was supposed to be over for my area!
I was just sitting in the living room, minding my own business and the weather alarm radio went off for a tornado warning. Right now the rotation is 15-20 miles south of us. But earlier, they said it was moving SE, now they say NW, so I guess I can’t get complacent.
doc - When I was growing up, we had a tom cat we named “Crazy Cat” - C.C. for short. I hadn’t thought of that cat in a long time, until you mentioned yours.
Doc et al with cats I swear that cats can hang in the air shifting their position to land on their feet. I saw a documentary showing falling cats. They twist in the air and always land on their feet.
I had a book before my big book purge (see AAH for definition). It was all photographs of cats DANCING with the writer of the book. They really are quite musical it seems.
RRAmom Your mention of Crazy Cat, C.C. for short reminds me of “Black Cat”, B.C. for short.
She wasn’t really ours, because we had Stormy then, and that’s all dad would allow. But we fed (well I fed her) out back. She had one litter of kittens after another. One fell down a pipe and we had the fire department get it out with a lasso. Caused quite a sensation in the area, and one parishioner told us it was our fault for encouraging the mother to stick around. She had a point. Of course, I wasn’t supposed to feed her.
Doc, my kitty Molly, the one who chases anything and bounces around, has the softest hair! She’s a short hair. All black except for a FEW very white hairs on her chest! she is so sweet and loving and goofy! Her previous owners decided they wanted a dog instead and she was pregnant so they called ROFF and said if they didn’t come get her they were going to set her outside and let her fend for herself, in the dead of winter! I saw her kitties photos, 3 of tehm all black, they were so cute! Anyway, she came home with us from ROFF! Of our three cats she has the closest personality to my Hannah, my first avatar. I’m not trying to replace Hannah but I think Molly came to us for a reason, if you get my drift! AND I THINK I TOLD YOU ALL THIS BEFORE, didn’t I?
shika - Yes, I was winding up my activities when he called. My friend in LA is married to my cousin, but he and I are closer. We talk almost every day.
All this talk of cats reminds me of Derek Tangye who wrote a whole series of books about the flower farm he and his wife Jeannie ran after the war in Cornwall England.
I just loved his books. H e wrote about his cats as they came along, Monty, Lama, Ambrose and Cherry- orange, black, orange, black cats respectively. He could spend a page or two just desribing their antics.
There must have been about 12 books in the series- thelast one was the saddest- his wife died prematurely of cancer, I believe.
Dry, I was just catching up on all the comments here and I saw your hugs. Thank you!! You must have had your radar on. I think I spoke too soon earlier. I’m not feeling so well now. Tummy is turning too much. I think I’m going to relax and probably fall asleep. I should be feeling much better in the morning. Also, I get this blasted pump off tomorrow too. That’s a big yea!!
RRAmom, Stay safe!
Goodnight Everyone!
JFri, veal parm, love it!! Did you eat anything hot and spicy for me too? I ended up with a roast beef, mayo, tomato, lettuce sandwich, (roast beef from Sunday dinner) and a couple of dill pickles! Not quite as exciting but good enough, and some kosher dill pickle chips and a glass of white wine.
I read some news headlines quick before I turned in. I can’t believe this… . some teenager won a texting contest! Didn’t read the story it’s on Yahoo,* but guess who I thought of???? :=D*
night dry i miss you all so much but have no time…. i have to go to work and the ortho tomorrow for my braces. :(
Shika if my life was nice a quite and nothing going on… you would have to worry about me, bc something is probably wrong. i live in crazyness. i have missed a chat with a dear friend i think 2 possibly 3 nights in a row. :( im very sad about that. i dont get to talk to her much and i enjoy the times i do… i just hope she knows im sorry and i will try harder the next couple of days. It is sad how busy my life is… i am supposed to be cleaning the dishes right now… went for a walk/run tonight and now on here. so im not catching up…. have to leave for work at 7am so i need to get off and do my work. night. peace and love all.

@johnnydoc, caught your comment yesterday on the weather. You can use the cheap weather indicator I’ve seen sometimes: a piece of twine.
When it’s wet, it’s raining.
When it’s icy, it’s cold.
When it sways, it’s windy.
When it’s gone, it’s a tornado (or hurricane, etc.)

We have a local municipal airport, errr, a grassy strip with two tie-downs and a windsock. Once a year, they put up a new windsock. That, plus the annual rent, makes for a cheap airport. And the owner gets to grow hay on it to boot!
Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago
bmonk We’ve got one of those in our housing development.

Just so nobody needs worry, yes, there is a tornado spotted not too far from us here in Real Life–but it is heading more or less away from us, with a little bit of English to the side. Oddly, it’s heading northwest, not towards the east like a well behaved tornado…

bmonk: Are tornados common in your area? CO has been getting tham lately, and I thought that they were an unusual occurrence there.
bmonk over 15 years ago
We get some every year, but not as many as, say, Kansas-Nebraska, or Texas. It’s from the cool Canadan air meeting the warm, wet Gulf Coast air. Most storms head east: Northeast or Southeast. Every so often we get one going backwards, towards the west. A few years back, the Bismarck-Mandan area had 5 or 6 tornados going northwest on November 2nd!
Yeh, we have basements, loads of them.

bmonk, cool avatar!

Hi Marg!!
Dry and Dusty Premium Member over 15 years ago
JFri, you had to borrow aBB? What did you do, break yours again?
bmonk over 15 years ago
Naah, tornados are fascinating even when you live up here. As RRAmom said 6 eventful hours ago, there’s really no need for people to die, unless they have inadequate shelter, because they get warnings out quite well, with plenty of time to get under cover. More people die these days, I think, when they try to get videos of the weather, or think, “It’s not coming here.” Maybe if we had more tornados, we’d get more tired of them.
Besides, I agree with Rmom: it’s not like a wildfire or hurricane or earthquake that hits such a wide swath of territory. A tornado is quite limited in its effect.
bmonk over 15 years ago

Hi DRY!
carmy over 15 years ago

Hi carmy! I too am glad you don’t feel too bad!
bmonk over 15 years ago
Carmy, I’ve not been in a tornadic storm when near windows, but I remember being in one near the Missouri River. The plate glass windows were flexing in the storm winds, and we all hurried to a more protected place. Luckily, none of the windows cracked, but elsewhere some roof rocks (about 1-2 inch diam.) were sent through windows, and a cinder-block wall around a air-conditioning plant was torn down. Still, it was exciting to see!
margueritem over 15 years ago
bmonk: That’s a great map. I see that the eastern part of CO gets a lot of tornados, and that they even get some in CA. The western states don’t get that many compared to the rest of the country.
Tinley Park is close to Oak lawn, so it may have done some damage there, too.
bmonk over 15 years ago
I think it’s interesting how altitude affects tornadoes. Note how the Appalachians and the Ozarks are lighter, and the similar pattern when you hit the Rockies, as in Colorado and Wyoming.

johnnydoc5 over 15 years ago
I found that interesting too, bmonk. I have only been in one tornado, and it was a “straight-line” tornado. The wind speed was mild, compared to some, (80mph) I think. Gusts were stronger.
I slept right through it.
margueritem over 15 years ago

I saw her kitties photos, 3 of tehm all black, they were so cute! Anyway, she came home with us from ROFF! Of our three cats she has the closest personality to my Hannah, my first avatar.
