I see it’s on Sunday so most prople will have a three day weekend. If you have any extra ice cream and whipped toppings feel free to drop some off at the BT.
Hi, Doc!
Usually the 4th ends up being one of our biggest holidays around here, because we often invite people over to celebrate here. Less extended family obligations for that holiday, and we can shoot off fireworks on our property.
But I decided to not invite anyone this year. Hubby’s not too sure if he’ll get it off as busy as they are. It (the 5th) is one of the holidays on the company calendar, but doesn’t guarantee the plant will be shut down. It would also require a LOT of work to make the house presentable for company, and I’d rather spend that time cleaning out junk, instead of just hiding it.
I have an aunt and uncle that used to have family reunions every other 4th, One year I think it was 80 people, from all over the US and even Africa, Italy and Austraila. I hooked up the electric fence to an outside shower stall. I didn’t know a person could yell that loud! (I didn’t realize at the time how powerful it was, I won’t do that again.)
I almost always leave some ice cream. A bite or two anyway. Just don’t count those cartons that someone [not me] leaves lying around. I’m innocent, I tell you. :-)
Hi, Serena!
Hi, Wolfie! I just warmed up and ate most of my leftovers from Saltgrass. Leftover steak isn’t as great at the 1st time, but baking it works reasonably well. Good enough that my youngest took whatever steak I’d let him have from my leftovers.
Sojo - Your prank reminds me of my late father. He liked to walk holding hands, and then he’d reach out & grab the electric fence. I wonder if he realized that might have been why I was a bit skittish about getting affection from him?
Doc - I remember eating Lucerne brands when I was growing up, because Mom always shopped at Safeway. But there aren’t any Safeways in the area any more that I know of, so that’s no longer an option
It was common there to shock someone while you were holding a weed to touch the fence with. That’s why I didn’t know how powerful it was. Once my uncle was having fun shocking the pigs when he accidentally shocked himself. He said that if he would of known how much it hurt he wouldn’t of been shocking the pigs!
Sojo - Hogs have thicker or at least tougher skin than us humans. That’s probably the reason “pigskin” was (is?) used for footballs. Dad raised hogs for years, and made me help. So unfortunately, I know more about hogs than I care to admit.
Serena - Did you find the quilts on my PB that you were looking for? They are in the “Artwork by Mom” album. I haven’t had much time for hobbies, as homeschooling keeps me plenty busy.
Sojo - I learned that hogs didn’t feel pain as easily as we do, when I had to kick them in the snout to keep them from chewing on my shoes (while my feet were still inside them). It took a lot to get their attention.
Rmom - I don’t know that much about farm animals. I remember seeing my cousins trying to herd some pigs with sheets of corigated metal. It seemed to take a lot to move them. One of my cousins cut himself in one of the pigpens. He got a double shot for tetanus because he had a pig die of tetanus in that pen earlier that week.
I got up pretty late this morning and haven’t really left the laptop since - save to get some CocoMocha. Since I need a refill, I’ll take one if anyone’s still at the bar. Otherwise I’ll have to take a walk out in the sauna that is called Houston Summer Weather and seek what I may devour…
Sojo - My folks had 40 acres out SW of town. Both of my parents were farm kids, so even though Dad worked at Boeing, he enjoyed farming as a sometimes and barely profitable hobby shortly after I was born. We lived in town until I was in 8th grade, and moved out to the farm then. Dad would bring the runts of the litter into our house in town where we girls would take care of them until they were big enough to sell or go back with the rest of the herd. (I think he had stopped raising hogs because they weren profitable. before we moved to the farm.)
Hi, Ladywolf & Johanan!Sojo - Dad was from Reno Co., Mom from Sumner, so I’m KS born & bred. But I know OK fairly well. I lived in OKC for a little while, and a couple of brothers are OU grads. They just recently moved back to OK.
Johanan - I didn’t realize you are also in Houston. Made my first trip (that I know of anyway) there this last week. It was hot there, but didn’t feel any worse than what KS has been like.
Ladywolf - I took a quick look at your photobucket area. I noticed you had a lot of C&H. One of the reasons I liked C&H was the different expresions Bill was able to put on Calvin, more than any other cartoonist I can think of.
Ladywolf - I still like amusment parks ane roller coasters in paticular. I once worked for a short while at an amusment ride manufacture and after work you could ride on them to test them. It would often have rides at the fastest speed for 30 min. Then after doing spins in airplanes and not quite legal manuvers the amusment parks just seemed to become boreing unfortunantly.
I learned to fly at a small airport (hard to land at) by an instructor that was taking aerobatic leasons and said anyone he taught would really know how to fly. That was a long time ago though.
Ladywolf - Enjoy the rollercoasters, etc. while you can! Both my hubby & I enjoyed them. Then we started having kids, and someone had to stay with them while everyone else went on the rollercoasters. That someone usually was me, unless I could get someone else to take a turn. We did take the kids on the coasters with us as much as possible - our youngest rode the big wooden rollercoaster at Joyland in Wichita when he was only 18 months old! He enjoyed it, even did it more than once. I found after I hit 40 that certain designs with side-to-side motion caused my head to hurt, so had to start being more picky about which ones I rode. About the following year, my husband’s neck got so bad, he couldn’t ride most of them. Bummer getting old!
Hi Rmom. Yes I saw the pictures of your quilts. They are beautiful. I would llke to make blocks showing some of the things you don’t see around much anymore. Things like grain elevators, stooks of grain or bales of hay in the field, horse drawn equipment. I can see these pictures in my mind but I don’t know whether I can get them right. These things are part of our history and I hope I’m not taking on a project that is too ambitious for me. I was born and raised on a farm but I was very young when my Dad changed to tractors etc from horses. But I can still remember
I seem to be in a strange mood tonight. It must be because I haven’t had any
ICE CREAM.
Serena - That is a great idea for a quilt! I wonder if the Amish have done that? I know the Mennonites make a lot of quilts, and presume the Amish do as well.
I can take pictures of grain elevators, maybe stalks of grain, etc. for you, if you need some for inspiration. Mom might have some photos like that in her albums. I haven’t gotten around to scanning any from her huge collection of photos, but she would have been likely to. (Either my sister or myself have possession of all the photo albums. She had more room to keep them, but I’ll have to do all the scanning.)
They are cutting wheat around here this week, but I don’t remember seeing too many uncut fields, so it maybe too late to take those types of pictures this year. I presume you saw the wheat-themed paintings too?
I have to go now and I don’t know if I’ll make it back tonight. My computer’s being a pain so I might just shut it down and leave it alone for the night. That’ll show it.
Rmom I would love that. Most of the grain elevators have been torn down and not too many farmers use stooks or horse drawn equipment any more, so I would have to rely mostly on my imagination and memory.
Hi Ladywolf I like most kinds of ice cream except licorish. [Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. Now everyone will only have that]
I no what you mean serenasakitty I’m not a big fan of any licorice ice cream. Just the taste gives you a bad after taste in your mouth that wont go away immediately.
I have recently started eating a little black licorice just because it is around. I noticed there is a major difference in some of the black licorices.
I like the jelly beans. I bought some really squishy licorice for Gma, it is pretty good. But I am not a great fan of licorice. When we went camping there were these (probably licorice roots) that grew on the side of the trees in the moss. I really liked those. But do not eat, just chew and suck a little.

I see it’s on Sunday so most prople will have a three day weekend. If you have any extra ice cream and whipped toppings feel free to drop some off at the BT.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
George Arnold over 14 years ago
I have an aunt and uncle that used to have family reunions every other 4th, One year I think it was 80 people, from all over the US and even Africa, Italy and Austraila. I hooked up the electric fence to an outside shower stall. I didn’t know a person could yell that loud! (I didn’t realize at the time how powerful it was, I won’t do that again.)
serenasakitty over 14 years ago
Hi Doc.
I almost always leave some ice cream. A bite or two anyway. Just don’t count those cartons that someone [not me] leaves lying around. I’m innocent, I tell you. :-)

Hello ♠Lonewolf♠ and everyone else I might of forgot to say hi to.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Hi, Serena! Hi, Wolfie! I just warmed up and ate most of my leftovers from Saltgrass. Leftover steak isn’t as great at the 1st time, but baking it works reasonably well. Good enough that my youngest took whatever steak I’d let him have from my leftovers.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Sojo - Your prank reminds me of my late father. He liked to walk holding hands, and then he’d reach out & grab the electric fence. I wonder if he realized that might have been why I was a bit skittish about getting affection from him?
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Doc - I remember eating Lucerne brands when I was growing up, because Mom always shopped at Safeway. But there aren’t any Safeways in the area any more that I know of, so that’s no longer an option
George Arnold over 14 years ago
It was common there to shock someone while you were holding a weed to touch the fence with. That’s why I didn’t know how powerful it was. Once my uncle was having fun shocking the pigs when he accidentally shocked himself. He said that if he would of known how much it hurt he wouldn’t of been shocking the pigs!
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Sojo - Hogs have thicker or at least tougher skin than us humans. That’s probably the reason “pigskin” was (is?) used for footballs. Dad raised hogs for years, and made me help. So unfortunately, I know more about hogs than I care to admit.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Serena - Did you find the quilts on my PB that you were looking for? They are in the “Artwork by Mom” album. I haven’t had much time for hobbies, as homeschooling keeps me plenty busy.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Enjoy, Doc!
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - The pigs just grunted when shocked, that’s why he didn’t think they were bothed by it. They probably didn’t feel it much in reality.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Good bye Doc and get some good sleep!
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Sojo - I learned that hogs didn’t feel pain as easily as we do, when I had to kick them in the snout to keep them from chewing on my shoes (while my feet were still inside them). It took a lot to get their attention.
ladywolf17 over 14 years ago
What a most wonderful day. It felt good to get out and have fun.
COWBOY7 over 14 years ago
God natt, Doc. Catch you tomorrow!
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - I don’t know that much about farm animals. I remember seeing my cousins trying to herd some pigs with sheets of corigated metal. It seemed to take a lot to move them. One of my cousins cut himself in one of the pigpens. He got a double shot for tetanus because he had a pig die of tetanus in that pen earlier that week.

Good afternoon, Tribe!
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Hello Johanan - I’m sure there’s some here, no need to get a sauna now!
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Sojo - My folks had 40 acres out SW of town. Both of my parents were farm kids, so even though Dad worked at Boeing, he enjoyed farming as a sometimes and barely profitable hobby shortly after I was born. We lived in town until I was in 8th grade, and moved out to the farm then. Dad would bring the runts of the litter into our house in town where we girls would take care of them until they were big enough to sell or go back with the rest of the herd. (I think he had stopped raising hogs because they weren profitable. before we moved to the farm.)

Hi, Ladywolf & Johanan! Sojo - Dad was from Reno Co., Mom from Sumner, so I’m KS born & bred. But I know OK fairly well. I lived in OKC for a little while, and a couple of brothers are OU grads. They just recently moved back to OK.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Johanan - If you end up with more than you want I’ll try some it.
Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Johanan - I didn’t realize you are also in Houston. Made my first trip (that I know of anyway) there this last week. It was hot there, but didn’t feel any worse than what KS has been like.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Rmom - Most of my family are OSU grads. I know most of north central OK better than a lot of Kansas even though I’ve always lived here.
ladywolf17 over 14 years ago

I spent the day with my boyfriend. First we were at the beach, then we hit the amusement park and had fun, especially riding the roller coaster.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Ladywolf - I took a quick look at your photobucket area. I noticed you had a lot of C&H. One of the reasons I liked C&H was the different expresions Bill was able to put on Calvin, more than any other cartoonist I can think of.
COWBOY7 over 14 years ago
C&H is a great cartoon strip, Sojo.
George Arnold over 14 years ago
Right on ♠Lonewolf♠! I think I have all of the books that were published.
COWBOY7 over 14 years ago
I do too, Sojo. Been one of my faves since it was a current strip in the papers.
ladywolf17 over 14 years ago
I’m a huge fan of C&H as you can tell.

Ladywolf - I still like amusment parks ane roller coasters in paticular. I once worked for a short while at an amusment ride manufacture and after work you could ride on them to test them. It would often have rides at the fastest speed for 30 min. Then after doing spins in airplanes and not quite legal manuvers the amusment parks just seemed to become boreing unfortunantly.
ladywolf17 over 14 years ago
I’ve only been in an airplane a few times. Only for traveling.
George Arnold over 14 years ago

ICE CREAM.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta have
ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!Excuse me. The dark side was coming oout.
It must be because I haven’t had any ICE CREAM.
ladywolf17 over 14 years ago
I didn’t get to ride the roller coaster last year because of a broken ankle, so I more than made up for it.

Smiley Rmom over 14 years ago
Serena - That is a great idea for a quilt! I wonder if the Amish have done that? I know the Mennonites make a lot of quilts, and presume the Amish do as well. I can take pictures of grain elevators, maybe stalks of grain, etc. for you, if you need some for inspiration. Mom might have some photos like that in her albums. I haven’t gotten around to scanning any from her huge collection of photos, but she would have been likely to. (Either my sister or myself have possession of all the photo albums. She had more room to keep them, but I’ll have to do all the scanning.) They are cutting wheat around here this week, but I don’t remember seeing too many uncut fields, so it maybe too late to take those types of pictures this year. I presume you saw the wheat-themed paintings too?

I have to go now and I don’t know if I’ll make it back tonight. My computer’s being a pain so I might just shut it down and leave it alone for the night. That’ll show it.

Just pulling a Shika here for a moment.

I like the jelly beans. I bought some really squishy licorice for Gma, it is pretty good. But I am not a great fan of licorice. When we went camping there were these (probably licorice roots) that grew on the side of the trees in the moss. I really liked those. But do not eat, just chew and suck a little.
