Drug enforcement is taking drugs and expired drugs in no questions asked. Where were they 11 years ago. When our dad died he had a lot to get rid of I would have been glad to use that service.
Busy day a lot of traveling coming going with sis and hubby with us two here to OK City to view memorial from Fed building that local terriots blew up over 15 years ago. Not as bad as NYC WTT, though locally bad enough 1,000’s of lives changed.
Good morning or afternoon, tribe!
I’ve decided I was in over my head trying to tutor my son in College Algebra, since I’d never taken the course, don’t go to class with him, and I don’t have a solution manual. Spent most of last evening arranging for a tutor for him. Thankfully, she is my best friend’s daughter, so it should mean that I’ll have an excuse to spend more time with my friend.
I’m trying to help Kab with her English for her written Pyschology assignments. In the process, I ran across a neat website that does a great job of helping people remember which word to use for proper grammar. The examples are more interesting than the ones generally used in English classes.
Sojo - My grammar is fairly good, mostly because my parents’ grammar wasn’t horrible - not perfect, but fairly good. Also, I love to read books, and that has helped me to get an eye and ear for the correct spellings and usages. However, because I picked up most of my grammar naturally, I tested high enough that for junior high, I was placed in an Accelerated English class. Which meant that I was never taught grammar, including grammar rules and diagramming sentences.
Chicken nuggets
French Fries
Rotel cheese dip (home made myself) w/sesame seeds
assorted dips for those who don’t like mildly hot stuff
Jalapenos to add to the cheese dip for those who like it hot
Assorted Drinks, coffe (all kinds including Doc’s teas
For dessert, cake and ice cream bar complete with all the fixings. Imagine it and it’s yours!!
Rmom - I tend to follow logic. Spelling and grammer didn’t seem to follow set rules (too many exceptions). Because of that I lost intrest in learning it.
Quaby - Thanks for the lunch it sure looks good. I’ll have German chocolate cake for desert! :-)
Doncha just love messing with ‘em, Grog?
Tho I’ll probably get my account pulled if I keep it up. It just seems a tad asinine to flag greetings. Maybe if we whisper.
Anyone know how to generate a #4 font size?
Toon comment 5 Grand an hour and he’s complaining?
gotta go for now.
It’s a REALLY nice day clear and low 60’s YES!
BBL
Sojo - I know much of English grammar and spelling seems illogical. However, I believe that if one studies the history of language, it becomes clearer. Many of the phonetical rules vary because of the root language that word came from, such as Saxon, French, Briton, etc. Also, many spellings varied from region to region, based on one’s accent. With the advent of the printing press, there was a need for more standardized spellings of words, which is why Noah Webster created the American dictionary. The problem comes in teaching English, it is comprised from so many different original languages, that one would have to spend a lot of time studying the history behind the rules, so the rules are taught through rote memory more than through logical thinking.
I don’t do well at rote memorization either, I memorize context and meaning more than I do just regurgitating facts. One of the reasons I do well in spelling, is because I have excellent hearing, and my mother taught me the sounds the different letters make before I entered public school. Therefore, I can sound out the words, and catch many of my mistakes before I hit “send”.
Quaby - Thanks for the cheese dip! Of course, since it is virtual for me, the sesame seeds aren’t a problem for me like they are in real life. (Can’t have seeds due to diverticulitis.)
Rmom That’s a bummer about the diverticulitis. The sesame seeds add just a hint of sweet to the dip.
And now I’m getting the sleepies. I have a bit more energy today, dunno how long that will last, but sleepies mean SLEEP, do not take 5-Hour. There’s no need for 5-Hour when your bed is assessable without fear of being fired.
Rmom - Origanal Japanese before it became mixed with Chinese solved many problems. I think their alphabet had 52 letters (50 something). Each letter was a sound, each sound had it’s on letter. Alhough it took longer to learn the alphabet, once learned a small child could read and spell anything.
I remember once when working with EMS we had an address on “Shadows” street ( that’s how it sounded). Although we were headed in the right direction I couldn’t find it on the map. Finally dispatch had to locate it and tell us where it was. It was in a new rich area with special street names. I remember the street didn’t have an “s” or “w” in it (or an “h” I think).
Sojo - I know one of the things that make spelling tricky is that the Romans insisted that the Latin letters were used for each language area they conquered. (I don’t think they were as successful with the Jews as most of the other groups.) So, the same letters were used for French, Spanish, English, etc. That’s why it takes two letters for the “th” sound - there are more sounds than letters.
I have a rough time with spelling foreign words that I haven’t seen & heard much. I remember thinking “Sean” should always be pronounced like “seen” instead of “shawn”.
@Sojo & Rmom, another difficulty with English is drift of word pronunciations.
Some words that used to rhyme, and so had similar spellings, kept the spellings but not the sound (tough / cough for example–these lost the “yogh” sound, a gutteral fricative, which dough also lost, but in a different way).
Korean is another language which is easy to spell–but then their alphabet was only devised about 700 years ago.
Gee, I slept through Lupper and moved right into Supper. There’s plenty left Tribe. Personally I think the elves from Hogwarts live behind/beside/under the tent and that’s why our food has a hard time ending.
Got to move on to real stuff, the Yard Sale is next saturday and I’ve got tons and tons to do.
RMOM Be grateful to have missed grammar. I went from 5th grade math to algebra, thereby missing the New Math 0f the 60s. I may not know a thing about set theory, but I remember both semesters of calculus. In grad school Macro-economics, when the professor started writing funny markings on the board, my younger co-students looked around with a dazed look. But they knew set A was a subset of set B.
Sojo - Just got back from ICT. I was driving on K-96 to Kellogg, and the rain was coming down very hard. The way K-96 is there, I didn’t really expect there would be enough water on the pavement to hydroplane, but I think there was enough. I was glad to have a stick shift, so I did okay. I was thankful for the Rain-X on my windshield, too!
As soon as it moves far enough south, we’re going to supper. BBL.
Hey all. Got back close to 7pm. Ones in KS if you ever have a chance go to OK City seen the Murrow Fed building impressive what was rebuilt after the terrorist attach 15 years ago. Attack was 4/17/95. I asked ones who work there an OK legislator has decreed student’s should study the bombing that took place then.
ThanksRmom I read your email and have yet to check the link. I have it saved on word documents. By the way I know I have trouble with word maintenance I know there are two n’s as I have to write up workorders and record on Excel for dept and certain staff to see including boss.
I unfortunately have to say this I wasn’t raised like Rmom my mom dropped out of school from 8th grade. She is 85 schooling was never priority to her whereas helping her dad was in her young days. She tries to pattern off of him to. Like her house she feels like her dad did though different century. Her dad let the house go to pot back in 60’s as a result torn down. She doesn’t know this yet next Sat son-in-law plans to do work where siding has come down. Right now she doesn’t feel so good. Sinus infection again w/headache.
Kab - I can’t hang around very long. My hubby & I are looking up restaurants for dinner tomorrow. His b-day is Monday, so it is my treat to him. (He usually does a lot of the cooking for Sunday dinners.)
