Calvin, that’s because there are no pretty schools.

Where does Calvin live? Is it next to a park or nature preserve? The backgrounds always seem so expansive without signs of fencing or walls. And it seems to be in his backyard. Lucky kid, but only Hobbes seems to appreciate it.

I agree with cleokaya and doctortoon. Corpuskevin, things would close here in GA too - just the mention of the white stuff is enough. So far no snow where I live, just a few flurries, but winter isn’t over yet.

Too much sun! Too many birds chirping! Too much cheer! Shut the place down!

Calvin is really mad at himself for not doing the snow dance the night before.

Obviously Calvin has never been in the Deep South, where a DUSTING of snow brings chaos–he should ask dad to transfer to Atlanta, Birmingham or Memphis!

hehe.. same situation in India. we used to pray for enough rain so that wading through the water would be dangerous enough.

hahhaha, and imagine some Russian reading this, just after he took his child to school at -40 degrees Celsius! He probably would laugh because Calvin think that someone would close the school JUST because of snow! :D

I Don’t miss snow days. I grew up in rural Wisconsin in the 70s with 4 channels of television, no video games and no close neighbors. Snow days meant being stuck at home with nothing to do. My kids, on the other hand, enjoy the heck out of them with Satelite TV, HS Internet, and Video games galore. So out of Envy I give them my Old codger liteny when I get home from work….Up Hill….In the Snow…Blah…Blah…Both Ways…Blah Blah :) I love Calvin!!!

Lived in North Carolina for a few years. Once had an inch of snow, enough to cover the roads. At that time the city had no plowing equipment and weren’t prepared for it. EVERYTHING stopped, including school! But I was running around in my liitle MG because I was used to it!

That rascal Calvin appears to be having more fun than me! I hate that.

Calvin’s lucky he doesn’t live in Saskatchewan. They don’t close school here unless it’s below -50 celsius!

Here in Northern Alabama they closed a bunch of schools because it dropped below 10 degrees without any snow at all.

Of course closing school is all that matters to Calvin. I was waiting for him to also complain that it wasn’t enough snow to engage in a really good snowball fight.

Calvin you should try to be patient. Snow will come. I love Hobbes, he’s so philosophical about things.

Hobbes appreciates ‘what is’ rather than ‘what could have been’. But ofcourse, Hobbes doesn’t have to go to school so he can afford to do that.

I live in Michigan and they don’t bring the plows out for less than an inch. A company I used to work for is based in Atlanta. Once they got an inch of snow and they shut down the whole city.

What a sad statement of our society!

I live in VA, near the SE coast. On Jan 20, all the weather forecasters were PREDICTING snow. Schools closed. We got….NOTHING. Move here Calvin, you will get a day off.

I grew up in Kansas City. I remember the snow drifts being deep enough to tunnel in and the snow forts lasting for weeks (unless one of the neighbors tore it down). One time when I was walking home from middle school that had been closed due to snow, I saw lightning and heard thunder, which suprised me. I then witnessed a genuine white-out. I’ve never seen one since. We don’t seem to get as much snow anymore as we used to.

I’ll bet Calvin can still manage to make a snowball to throw at Suzie.

How fitting. I went out to get the newspaper today and discovered we had a skiff of snow, less than an inch. I thought of Calvin as I walked down our long driveway wearing sandels. What good is less than an inch of snow when you don’t even need boots.

Well, I grew up where there was no snow. The only time my school was closed was when the Baldwin Hills dam broke and the school got flooded out.

Prettiness never cancelled school but it sure caused me to skip school more than once.

@#1 redskins fan, I guess you’re right. Wanted to appeal to people not to pay attention on TC and became a lot like him.

Calvin and hobbes often remind me of the comparison between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. I find it interesting and one more reason to enjoy the strips even more. In my case and, mostly because my age is keeping me in school, i must agree with calvin. Although in an open field with the trees glistening and the giant white sheet of unstepped snow beneath you, it is very pretty.

Calvin wishes his school would be closed due of the snow in his area. Alas, he had no choices but he had to go to his school anyway.

Kevin, Where in Wisconsin? I grew up in a small town called Rice Lake in the 50’s and 60’s. Only difference was thaey never called snow days back then.

Gweedo, we’re cool. In my quest for brevity in my comments I sometimes also skimp on clarity.

I have been noticing over the last few days certain comments that I have left on various sites have disappeared after I revisit the site. I don’t believe that they have been overly offensive. Has anyone else other Than TC seen their comments vanish?

i have never had a snow day before. the first time i saw snow in person was Jan 11 ( i think) and the teachers all swore if it snowed there would be no school. they lied!!! we went to school. we had less then an inch but it was snow and i loved it.

You’re right freedomfroze; and it seemed to me especially crazy since I had been raised in Calgary–where the minimum for panic in Atlanta would be greeted by the NEWEST-arrived Calgarians as “where is it?”.

Up here on the northern plains of Dakota, it takes well over an inch, or a good stiff wind (and its ground drifting) to shut things down. Like this morning. Then we just start digging and plowing out, and go back to work, school, etc. Otherwise, we’d never get anything done from some Octobers to May! :) :) :)

cleokaya, I have had the same problem in the last two days. I had to post an answer to Gweedo twice.

Calvin can certainly have what we got a couple of weeks ago. I live in the Louisville, KY area. We got at the VERY least 7” of snow, an ice storm, and, in a lot of areas, no electricity for well over a week! It was completely miserable!!! At least when we got hit by Ike last September and lost our power for a week then, there was plenty of light in the evening, the weather was pretty much perfect and we could grill out. Not alot you can do when it’s below freezing cold outside and it’s dark by 6:30 p.m.!

Well it never snows over where I live.

We would love an inch of snow or even some rain here. We have had bushfires raging for over a week now and have over 200 people dead and missing. Very sad times although Calvin keeps me smiling.

I had one disappear on me today from Garfield where TC posted, and a lot of others besides mine disappeared. So they removed TC’s comment and everyone who replied about TC. From now on I will just flag TC if he posts and then say nothing about it in my comment.

mark…my thoughts are with you in Australia. I can not imagine your loss.

It is not just TC strips. I have had comments removed from sites where TC hasn’t posted.

Verrry interesting. Our new President recently got his shorts in a knot because his girls’ school called a snow day. Good thing Calvin’s last name isn’t Obama…he’d have to go to school no matter how deep it got, huh? Comments?

~He’s from Chicago, as am I. The schools there would not close for just an inch of snow. They would close when we had a blizzard, and the plows could not keep up with it. What part of the country are you from?
