As parents you learn to make the most of time the two of you get to spend together uninterrupted away from the house. We were young parents with small incomes back then as well as our married friends. Babysitters were so expensive so we decided to take turns watching each others kids so we all got a break once a month. I think the kids enjoyed it as much as we did!

    Susan,

I think both Mom and Dad are making it clear to him that the baby sitting is for a short time only. He is already used to having Rosalyn come over for baby sitting. I dont think there is any chance of Calvin thinking it is going to be forever.

Congratulations Margueritem for 40 years. I hope my husband and I see that. Ours is next month and I try to slow it down each day doesn’t work for us 29 years. In our neighborhood parent’s did not swap house with kids for parents had time away never heard of it. First time I heard about it was on Baby Blues. Kids would just go play at a neighbor’s house with other kids.

Susan, parents need to keep their own relationship fresh - for the sake of the children. A night to themselves will benefit the whole family. Like all children, Calvin needs to learn he cannot have his own way by demanding, whining, or playing other manipulative games.

But this is a comic, not a sociology or psychology text. It’s supposed to look at the events of real life in an exaggerated way so that we can laugh at them.

The wisest advice I ever received was that kids are transients. They are only with us for a short time (although now they keep coming back due to the economy), but husbands will be with us after the kids leave. Keep it fresh so that you know the man/woman you are retired with and it is not some stranger that you have ignored for 20 years and whom you have nothing in common,

Panel 3 and panel 4 part 1. If you can’t love that about Calvin, why do you bother to read this???

This is funny, not like FBOFW. CAN”T ANYONE SEE THE ABSOLUTE HILARITY THE KID DISPLAYS? That’s what it’s about, not the “poor parents”.

This page of pro parent psychobabble tells us you don’t get it at all. How sad.

Apparently, there was a hullabaloo yesterday which I missed. Some posts must have been flagged and removed. Sometimes a pause in the conversation is better than an unfortunate uproar from Calvin or anyone else. We discuss all kinds of issues here. Evidently, the subject mentioned yesterday hit a sensitive (sore) spot with somebody whose name I won’t mention. However, disgusting comments are never appropriate under any circumstances.

You just proved my point GrumblyW.

Don’t insult Susan. She understands the premise of the strip. She also sees that Calvin’s parents are always abrupt with him and are hard to like.

I love the Rosalyn segments to be honest. They are Calvin at his best.

One more time: Calvin is 100% perfect. He is an introvert, and is highly intelligent, and highly imaginative. He is the hero of the story. Everyone else is an antagonist. He’s 6, not 30. He will always only be 6. Nothing about him needs to be fixed. Those suggesting it don’t know this strip at all. You would do well to have a Calvin of your own. You’d know he would grow up pretty well off, unlike people who have to psycho analyze a cartoon child, instead of think like one, and who make anti-protagonist suggestions to a 24 year old comic strip that had a perfect run, and is next to only Peanuts in popularity.

Calvin remains 6 forever, and in order to understand this strip, you need to think like a 6 year old, period. Try it, it makes you feel better.

I got there late Puddlegum (my comment is still there). I don’t know what was going on except that the Calvin loves Suzie and Roaslyn thing was going on again. It looked like the same old running joke to me. I didn’t see any arguments going on. Someone please tell us what we missed yesterday. ; )

I’m sure most - if not all of us - been in Calvin’s position. I’m sure some of us were also quite the handfull as Calvin is. I can sympathize with both sides on this.

Being a homemaker, my Mom had to deal with my sister and me day in and day out with only a rare evening away from it all. Though I may not have thought so then, my parently DESERVED what little time away from us they got.

Yes the look on Calvin’s face is special in panel 4, but the look on Mom’s face is one we don’t often see.

margueritem - mazal tov to you and your other half - best wishes for many more!

(I’ve been reading C&H for a long time, so what I’m about to say depends on a lot of “background” material, but I think most of you have a similar level of familiarity…)

Calvin’s mom seems quite aware that Calvin doesn’t like Rosalyn, but he’s scared off most of the other sitters.

Rosalyn was reasonable with Calvin at first, but she quickly learned that this kid does not take prisoners.

So, he’s pretty much made his bed, and now he’ll have to sleep in it. Since he’s all of six years old, it’s pretty hard to put all of the blame on him, but still, this is the situation.

That said, I think the interaction of Calvin’s parents in the last frame is quite endearing… It reminds us that they are human… :)

I haven’t peeked ahead, but my guess is that, sadly, their evening out will get cut short…

Arguing with a “calvin” is an excersise in futility, and agreeing with him or helping/”nurturing” him doubly so!

Calvins parent could take the same stance that rosalyn does, which is probably the way a lot of parents DO interact with their kids, but they generally don’t intervene and give him a lot of leeway, which is probably the best thing for him.

I used to be a calvin way back when (my poor parents), and as a former calvin and a present day parent, I rather think that their lack of “compassion” for calvin is probably a pretty healthy way to interact with him, from BOTH perspectives.

It’s because of people like you, DDFENCE, that the male stereotype is still around. What, exactly, is your definition of a “girlie man?” It’s unbelievable to me that after all these years of women fighting for equality the world still has people like you: people who want a man to fix everything for them.

I have a Calvin myself. Almost his exact equal except for gender. She’s strong minded, inquisitive, imaginative and non-stop talker. Also she can’t stand school, is simply not interested in it and won’t complete the work. It’s a constant struggle. I have my good and bad days. That’s why I relate to Calvin and Hobbes. However having a real Calvin is very tiring and draining. I need a break too. Is Rosalyn available?
