Jason (youngest son): You're drawing a unicorn? Eh, figures. Paige (daughter): What's that supposed to mean? Jason (youngest son): Girls always draw lame-o things like unicorns. Never tanks or rockets or dinosaur farms...it's always butterflies or rainbows or flowers with little happy faces. It's like you have some sort of genetic inability to draw things that aren't cute. Peter (oldest son): Who's this little guy with the glasses that your unicorn is impaling? Paige (daughter): You mean the one spurting all the cute blood?

Actually, I do have an inability to draw things that aren’t cute. It’s a weakness, though, ‘cause I WANT to draw monsters. I just don’t know how.

When I was in first grade, at a parent/teacher conference, the teacher asked my mother and father if there was anything going on at home, because I was always drawing monsters with fangs and claws, and horns and spikes, and extra limbs and heads and tails, breathing fire…
