I’m not sure but I believe the USPS no longer offers steam boat or pony express. Everything goes by air. I do remember a blizard in Bufalo a few years ago where they wisely chose truck over planes.
There’s no such thing as “airmail” in the USPS any more. You can’t buy an “airmail” stamp, and there are no “airmail” rates. There’s “first class”, “express mail” and “priority mail” for letters.
If you’re not asking the “right” question to some people (ie: “Is there any OTHER way I could send a letter without an airmail envelope?”), you’re not going to trigger that kind of helpful thought process.

You don’t need an air mail envelope - you just need to write “AIRMAIL” on the envelope and get the proper amount of postage.
