One is that the term is a shortening of āforecaddieā (used to warn the caddie, who went ahead of the golfers in his party in order to see where their shots went). The other is that the military use of ābeware beforeā (shouted to infantrymen by trailing artillery crews who were about to fire) was transferred to the golf course.
