The only way I could be a math whiz if they insert a knowledge chip into my brain. But then we all know
that’s just mad science. Not to mention it would
also violate the laws of nature.
There are a couple of suggested origins for the use of “Fore” in golf. One is that the term is a shortening of “forecaddie” (used to warn the caddie, who went ahead of the golfers in his party in order to see where their shots went). The other is that the military use of “beware before” (shouted to infantrymen by trailing artillery crews who were about to fire) was transferred to the golf course.

Isn’t this sort of like the shepherd counting the sheep on a nearby hill by counting their legs and dividing by 4? ;-)

Why do they always yell “fore” ?? Wouldn’t “duck” be more appropriate??

Basically, it’s warning other golfers that a ball’s coming your way, so watch out

Roger is embarressed by Jason not yelling “fore”? This from a man wearing brightly colored plaid pants and a hat with a golf ball on the bill?

Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago
@elliotthemighty - I’d say “square root of 16”.

That’s a silly question … If we didn’t yell ‘fore’ how would we warn the ducks of impending danger?
mrprongs over 15 years ago
It’s short for, “For crying out loud, watch out. I’m hitting a ball your way.” To save time, they shortened it, and mispeled it.
